ARYAN TARI
(born Jun-04-1999, 25 years old) Norway

[what is this?]

Aryan Tari was Norwegian Junior Champion (2012), earned the IM title in 2013; won the Norwegian Championship in 2015, became a GM in 2016 and was World Junior Champion in 2017.

Tari was Norway's #1 junior and ranked in Norway's top ten of all players as of January 2016.

Master Norms

<IM norms> Tari's first IM norm came at the 2013 Norwegian Open in 2013 (this was also a GM norm). He won his second IM norm at the Sveins 6th Memorial Tournament in June 2013 and his third norm came at the Norwegian Championship (2013). Subsequently, he won another IM norm at the Politiken Cup (2013) and 5.5/9 and an IM norm at the RTU open A (2013) in Latvia.

<GM norms> Tari won his first GM norm at the Norwegian Open in 2013 and subsequently won a double GM norm at the European Team Championship in 2015 on 22 November. His rating of over 2500, combined with his GM norms met all the criteria for the GM title, which was ratified by FIDE at its first quarter Presidential meeting early in 2016. At the date of effect of his GM title, he was aged 16 years 5 months and 18 days.

Championships

<Youth> Tari finished equal eighth in the 2008 U10 World Championship, tied for sixth in the 2009 U10 World championship, and was unplaced but scored 7.5/11 in the 2010 U12 World championship.

<Junior> In July 2012, Tari won the Norwegian Junior Championship with 8/9, 1.5 points clear of the field. In October 2014, he scored 8/13 at the World Junior Championship and repeated that score in the same event in 2015, placing fifth ex aequo.

<National> Tari finished equal third at the 2009 Norwegian Open Championships with 5/7, behind Joachim Solberg and Pal Andreas Hansen, earned an IM norm at the 2013 Norwegian Championship with 5/9. Won the Norwegian Championship in 2015 with 7/9.

<World> In November 2017, Tari became World Junior Champion with 8.5/11, on tiebreak ahead of Manuel Petrosyan and Chithambaram V R Aravindh.

Tournaments

Tari was winner of the under 1950 prize at the 2010 Gibtelecom challengers division. He competed at Gibraltar Masters (2013), scoring a solid 5.5/10 and at the Reykjavik Open (2013), Tari scored an even more solid 6.5/10, these events adding nearly 30 ratings points to his card.

One of Tari's best results in his early career was the 2013 Norwegian Open, when he scored 6/9 to place seventh, where he scored his first GM norm. He scored a strong 6/9 at the Sveins 6th Memorial Tournament held in June 2013, 7/10 at the Politiken Cup (2013) and 5.5/9 at the RTU open A (2013) in Latvia. Tari scored a strong 7/10 at the Politiken Cup (2014), two points from the lead. In September 2014, he won the Krager Grand Prix A 2014 and in 2015 Tari scored 7/9, half a point from the lead at the Vienna Open. He also tied for second at the Vasteras Open 2015.

Team events

<National> Tari represented the Norway 2 team at the Tromso Olympiad (2014) on board 4, scoring a rating-enhancing 4.5/9. He also represented Norway at the European Team Championship (2013) and at the European Team Championship (2015), scoring a double GM norm at the latter, thereby meeting the final criterion for the GM title.

<Leagues> Tari first played in the European Club Cup in 2011, when he played board 4 for the Norwegian team Asker SK. He did not play in the ECC again until 2015 where he played on board 2 for the Norwegian Club Vålerenga SK. In 2015, Tari started playing in the Iranian Superleague, the Norwegian Premiere League and in the German Bundesliga, representing the SC Hansa Dortmund club in the latter.

  Tabanus: GM already, congrats!

Apr-05-16  capafischer1: His parents are from IRAN. He was born in Norway. His first name is actually persian not German FSR. Actually the meaning of the word IRAN is the land of Aryans. Look it up in Wikipedia. This kid is very talented and is on the rise. He is a Grandmaster now.
Apr-05-16  AsosLight: Has he ever played with Nazi Paikitze?
Apr-06-16  Appaz: My congratulations on the GM title!
May-23-16  Appaz: Very strong performance from Aryan Tari in the European Championship. After beating Ivan Saric (2650) with black in round 10 yesterday he is in 17th place with 7 points.

The quick draw against Robert Hovhannisyan (2632) today must surly place him among the 23 best and secure his qualification to the World Cup!

Congratulations!

Jun-04-16  TheFocus: Happy birthday, Aryan Tari.
Sep-27-17  alfamikewhiskey: Tariq plays the big boys in Isle of Man Open, and does well: Draws against Leko, Adams and Short.
Sep-27-17  Arconax: Norway's next chess superstar? A very talented young man.
Nov-25-17  soldal: Junior Champion of the World!
Nov-25-17  Appaz: My congratulations to the new Junior World Champion!

This title will probably mean a lot when it comes to getting invitations to strong tournaments and also for the paycheck.

We are getting quite spoiled when it comes to world champion titles here in Norway and even more talents are coming up because of the Carlsen-effect.

Norway rocks !:)

Nov-25-17  LucB: Well done GM Tari!
Nov-26-17  Appaz: I would be nice if someone, while updating his bio, also could find a photo of the Champ.
Nov-26-17  zanzibar: <Appaz> https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe...

For some reason <CG> doesn't like to just copy over the WikiMedia free-use photos.

Nov-26-17  Appaz: <zanzibar> That's what creative commons are for. A nice find and a good photo. Take notice bio-editors.

Nov-27-17  Everyone:

"A famous fellow countryman of Tari was one of the first to congratulate.

The amazing @aryan_tari is the new junior world champion!! Kept his cool in a difficult position in the last round-the mark of a champion

— Magnus Carlsen (@MagnusCarlsen) 25. November 2017 Tari, who did not lose a single game in the tournament, also used twitter to thank his supporters and fans.

Thanks <Everyone>, really happy to be the 2nd world champion from Norway!!

"Yeah I'm sorry, I can't afford a Ferrari,
But that don't mean I can't get you there
I guess he's an X-box, and I'm more Aryan Tari
But the way you play your game ain't fair."
Oct-04-22  goodevans: I must admit Aryan Tari had slipped off my personal radar before today. Maybe the fact that Norway so badly underperformed in this year's Chennai Olympiad (2022) (even though Tari himself did okay) had something to do with that.

Anyway, his absolutely crushing win in the first round of the 37th European Chess Club Cup (2022) was a joy to play through (A Tari vs M Niemi, 2022).

Chessical: The Norwegian state broadcaster has an interview with Tari in which he complains that cannot make a living despite being the second strongest player in the country.

An extract:

"Norway's second best player, behind Magnus Carlsen, reveals that he is considering scaling back his chess efforts - and returning to education again.

He has still decided to participate in the WC in blitz and rapid chess in Uzbekistan at Christmas.

- I really considered dropping it this year, but at the same time I know that it is an important championship to compete in, he says.

The 24-year-old says that he does not have the finances to continue. Tari is without private sponsors. And he has also not received financial support from the Norwegian Chess Federation this year, something he is strongly critical of.

- I think it's a real pity. We have Magnus Carlsen, the world's best player for the past twelve years, and yet the association is unable to provide any money to send players.

Tari thinks it is strange that there is so little money in the chess federation. He points out that chess is shown on TV in Norway and that it is popular among the population.

But you knew that there was little money in the chess when you started?

- No one is forcing me to play chess. I have won the junior WC, and I have been number two in Norway for many years behind Magnus Carlsen. Nevertheless, the association has nothing in terms of sponsors or support. I choose to play, but it is not optimal. The situation is hopeless, he says... "
