Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-04-07  Whitehat1963: Fischer makes quick work of the Player of the Day by solving the puzzle after 27...Rhf8. Give it a look. Fischer also sidesteps some interesting opening traps.
Jan-04-08  Sularus: I find it amazing that this has never been kibitzed before.
May-19-09  SirChrislov: Volf Bergraser was a corr. GM and he is the late uncle of chessgames.com user ardarel.
May-09-10  technical draw: I guess as a correspondence GM you need more time to see things. 29..Bxe5 is a duffer's move. 29..Be7 and you can play on (albeit 2 pawns down).
May-10-10  Peter Nemenyi: One of the oddest openings that Fischer ever played in a formal game. He considered it worth quoting the opening moves in a note to the only Centre Counter in MSMG (Fischer-Robatsch, 1962), concluding that "White's extra Pawn should prevail" after 13. Bxd5. He also misspelled Dr. Bergraser's name.

Full credit to Bergraser for taking RJF into uncharted waters with his enterprising play. Just for that he deserved better than his unfortunate result in this tournament (half a point out of nine).

Oct-04-10  ardarel: Bergraser was not feeling well at the time of this tourney. He did not play many of his games because he ended up in a hospital with a case pneumonia, he was already developing days before. I am not pretending to hint that his result against Fischer would have been different, but I am sure that his final score could have been better than half a point of nine.
Oct-08-10  Peter Nemenyi: You modestly don't mention that Dr. Bergraser was your uncle, so thank you for the inside information. If the database can be trusted, then, he actually played five of his games at Monaco 1967, while forfeiting four due to illness.
May-28-11  hedgeh0g: I always answer 2...Nf6 in the Scandinavian with 3.d4 and 3...Bg4 with Be2, where the queen is quite well-placed after the exchange of bishops. However, 3.Bb5+ is arguably the critical line of this somewhat rare variation. White keeps the pawn and it isn't clear where Black's compensation lies. A compromised kingside is only meaningful if you have the space and development to exploit it.
