Dec-24-12 | | messachess: Nice place to be during the winter I think. |
Dec-24-12 | | waustad: OK, I didn't halucinate. The Swedish entry is actually two cities that are not very close together, Lund in Skåne and Linköping in Östergötland. They won their qualifying section and are paired against Riga in the quarter finals. |
Dec-24-12 | | Paint My Dragon: ... in the round of 16 you mean. Not yet reached the qfinal stage. |
Dec-25-12 | | waustad: True enough. I looked at the headings but somehow didn't line them up. |
Dec-25-12 | | waustad: It looks like The Swedes split with Riga. Does anybody know the tiebreak system? http://livegames.fide.com/alainciti... |
Dec-25-12 | | waustad: If I read the tiebreaks right, since the Swedes won on board 2 and lost on board 4, they win the tie break over Riga using the Berlin system of 4 pts for win on board 1, 3 for a win on board 2, ...

Dec-26-12
 | | Dionysius1: http://worldcitieschess.com/ London knocked out. I like the format though where members of knocked out teams can join the individuals tournament |
Dec-26-12 | | waustad: Grandelius won his game, but the Swedes were knocked out by Novi Sad: 1 1/2 - 2 1/2. It looks like the semis will be Hoogeveen vs Tashkent and Baku vs Novi Sad. |
Dec-27-12 | | Gryz: Baku beat Novi Sad.
Hoogeveen beat Tashkent.
Hoogeveen in the finals. Who would have expected that ? |

Average rating 2666. |

Dec-28-12 | | Nilsson: Waustad: I just want to comment your presentation of the swedish team.
In the Olympic games when Sweden was playing against Serbia, there was the same players, playing against each others, whith one exchange.Emanuel Berg, An excellent combination Player, he represented in the OL, but in this tournament, he was replaced by Pontus Carlsson (from Linköping, who also played in the Olympics)
In the Olympics 2-2, this time sadly 1/½ -2/½ (Nils made fantastic 2-0 against Ivanisevic as black!!)
I am not quite sure, what about the rules for this tournament. Lets give an example. GM Pontus Carlsson, is representing LASS Linköping, ( sometimes) Team Viking Sweden, and of course Sweden in the Olympic games, European champion...and so on.
The guys from Lund is really playing there, Nils Grandelius, Hans Tikkanen, Axel Smith and Sebastian Nilsson
So, what´s the point with this best, strongest) City of the world? My guess is, that the strongest City of the world, would still be Moskow

Dec-28-12 | | waustad: I agree. Teams from Moscow or Yerevan that got the best players who live there would probably sweep through this field. My interest in seeing Linköping involved is that I spent some time there visiting relatives in the 1970s. |
Dec-28-12 | | Gryz: Hoogeveen world champion !
When I said "who would have expected that", I was referring to the fact that Hoogeveen is only a small city in the Netherlands. Their chessclub seems to have 1 player with a 2000+ rating. However, the annual Unive chess tournament is played in Hoogeveen.
16th Unive Tournament (2012)
The 4 members of the Hoogeveen team are 4 Dutch players who have all participated in the Unive chess tournament in the past. |
Dec-28-12 | | waustad: Tiviakov to the rescue! It seems he wpn the decisive game in both the semis and the finals. |
Dec-28-12 | | Refused: <waustad: Tiviakov to the rescue! It seems he wpn the decisive game in both the semis and the finals.> He <only> was the match winner in the finals. In the semi-finals Giri and Sokolov scored the full points. |
Dec-29-12 | | GerMalaz: He did score the decisive game in the QF too. |
Dec-29-12 | | Willem Wallekers: I've been to London, Paris and Istanbul, but never to Hoogeveen :-( |
Dec-30-12 | | Kikoman: Congratulations to Hoogeveen Team! :) |
Dec-30-12 | | waustad: Have the players on the team ever been there? |
Dec-30-12 | | Gryz: Read my comment, waustad. It was only a few lines back. Hoogeveen is the host of the annual Unive chess tournament. All 4 Dutch players have played in that tournament before. So yes, they all have been to Hoogeveen. |
Dec-30-12 | | waustad: <gryz>Sorry. I was just responding to <WW>. I even recall looking at the Unive tournament some. |

Jan-03-13
 | | HeMateMe: Could Baku put up an "all time great" team, to enter this event? Of course, you have Kasparov, but there are others from Baku who could make the Bakuians (Bakutes? Bakooties?) a real force, in a team tournament. |
Jan-03-13 | | Refused: <HeMateMe: Could Baku put up an "all time great" team, to enter this event? Of course, you have Kasparov, but there are others from Baku who could make the Bakuians (Bakutes? Bakooties?) a real force, in a team tournament.> Scratch Kasparov from that list.
I doubt you could make the beast from Baku play for <his hometown> or any other Azeri city. Him playing for Moscow alongside Grischuk and others looks more likely. And as an all time great I would rate Paris probably above the other cities, if those legends somehow showed up in their prime years. Spassky, Kramnik and Alekhine. Team Paris on the other hand, could have looked much stronger, if "big Vlad" Kramnik decided to play for it. |
Jan-03-13
 | | HeMateMe: Well, I meant if, very hypothetically, players had to play for the city they were born in. I'm sure Moscow/St. Petersburg would destroy most competitors, but I think small Baku has had a number of grandmasters. |

Jan-04-13 | | waustad: They made the Diaz cartoon this week: http://www.chessvibes.com/cartoons/... |
