Sep-26-09 | | Squares: There is no way I can calculate that my dear chap. For me it looked way to speculative with Short's pieces not fully developed and King still exposed. |
Sep-26-09 | | Marmot PFL: short only needs to draw and whites edge (if any) looks to small for him to resonably expect more |
Sep-26-09 | | Ezzy: Efimenko needs to win, and he's having trouble trying to break down Nigel in the Ruy Lopez. Efimenko has never played this opening with white before so it's an attempt to bamboozle Nigel with some different preparation. click for larger viewOne game in the chessbase database with this position. There white played 10 Re1+ Be7 11 Bb3 b5 This game was a draw. |
Sep-26-09 | | whiteshark: Efimenko's opening choice went down like a lead balloon. For finding 12.Bb3 he's now down to 28 minutes... |
Sep-26-09 | | vonKrolock: <11...♘f5> 12.♗b3, followed by ♕e2 and ♖ad1, with g2-g4 at hand maybe white's best chance a gambit style sequence. But black's position looks solid... PS: In the meantime Short castled, provoking ♘c4 |
Sep-26-09 | | vonKrolock: For me , it seems that black's opening problems are solved, and the ♙ d4 still there... What Efimenko is looking for - a storm over 'f7' !? |
Sep-26-09 | | percyblakeney: Efimenko seems to be going for a desperate kingside attack in time trouble. |

 | | tamar: Despite Efimenko's best efforts at muddying the waters, the game will come down to a drawish rook ending soon. |
Sep-26-09 | | ROADDOG: Did Short play 23...Rxf3 a little to fast? Looks to me like he may lose the rook or get mated? |
Sep-26-09 | | pugofcrydee: i like white now, but then again im only like 140 ecf, but i dont like blacks pawns |
Sep-26-09 | | ROADDOG: 24...Rf5. I knew that. |

Sep-26-09 | | Atking: <tamar: Despite Efimenko's best efforts at muddying the waters, the game will come down to a drawish rook ending soon.> Yes and I'm just coming back to see this ending. |

Sep-26-09 | | Atking: My global impression of the match is Nigel Short was able even to make a +1/2 on the total result. More cautious in the first game or patient in the game 4. Indeed not a bad performance for Efimenko. It seems to have realised his best here. In general a good match with a figthing spirit. |
Sep-26-09 | | percyblakeney: Short keeps doing well in matches. To reach the title match against Kasparov he had to get past Speelman, Gelfand, Karpov and Timman, not weak opponents back then. In the dozen matches he has played in the last 20 years I think he only has been beaten by Kasparov and Kamsky, and that was when they both were very close to their best. |
Sep-26-09 | | szachista: Well done, GM Short! |
Sep-26-09 | | Jim Bartle: Seems Short has a history of losing the first game of a match, then roaring back to win. Tal used to lose the first game of tournaments so often that he joked about just not showing up until the second day. |
Sep-26-09 | | AnalyzeThis: Short deserves universal praise for falling behind a lower rated player, and then squeaking out a win. |
Sep-26-09 | | Jim Bartle: Decided to check. Aside from losing his first white against Efimenko, he lost his first white in three of his candidates matches in 91-93 (Gelfand, Karpov, Timman), yet won all three matches decisively. |
Sep-26-09 | | GalileoPiccolino: Short is climbing up the Long winding road to the Top! Kudos to the well-played games... |
Sep-26-09 | | Atking: Maybe losing the first game awake N Short. Rather impressive as it means that the "real" Short playing from the second game, the score is then 3.5 on 5! |
Sep-26-09 | | Ezzy: The camera never lies. Nigel's hand gesture tells the truth of what he thought about Efimenko's new opening in game 6. :-) http://www.chessbase.com/news/2009/... |
