Revised, in response to overwhelming popular demand!

I am an American, born (gulp) in 1950, who has lived in Peru for most of the past 30 years. I write and publish books on natural areas and archaeological sites around the country, especially in the Andes. Some of my most enjoyable games have chess have been played at campsites beside glacial lakes or at the foot of 6000m peaks. I was not accused of using Rybka during these games.

Reading and posting on chessgames is a great way to postpone the never-ending work of writing and editing.

I'm not a very strong player, and have never played a rated game or in anything beyond informal tournaments. I do play often against my implacable Hiarcs (I've upgraded from MacChess) and am gaining valuable and seemingly endless experience in holding the draw while playing the weaker side. Hiarcs does NOT like to accept draw offers!

I very much enjoy chessgames, and not only on the subject of chess. To those who complain about off-topic discussions, my only answer is that I enjoy chatting with the kibitzers here a lot more than those on sports or politics websites. More civilized.

Jim Bartle: I remember Wilt shooting underhand between his legs.the guy who shot underhand off to the right, the weirdest thing you'll ever see, was Dave Gambee, a Sixers forward. Greer not only shot jump shots on free throws, but he shot them off to the left, and a foot or two behind the ...

Jim Bartle: Hey, there's Internet on the bus. Alvaro Vargas Llosa is a well-known conservative in Peru, the son of the "national intellectual," and former conservative politician Mario Vargas Llosa. As campaign manager he is generally blamed for his father's shocking loss in the 1990 ...

Jim Bartle: Maybe somebody (or Taylor) has answered this, but why does he have to travel to Budapest to get experience? Why doesn't he play the Opens in the United States?

Jim Bartle: It's not done often because you have to take another player out of the lineup, and usually replace him with a weaker player. Not always, but most of the time.

Jim Bartle: I saw many games at Seals Stadium, with the giant glass of Hamm's Beer behind home plate, filling and re-filling. Remember Cepeda in left, turning to answer the fans who were yelling at him between pitches. Also saw an exhibition between the Red Sox and the minor league SF Seals ...

   Jun-17-13 Borislav Ivanov (replies)

Jim Bartle: Actually, having him play a match against AJ with all wireless communications blocked would be a good test. They're rated about equal, but according to recent results Ivanov should beat him easily. I doubt he would.
