Dec-27-24 | | stone free or die: Hi <steve> -
Can we move the analysis <Refresh> button back up so I have sometime to do while waiting for the engine to finish? Also - it used to be that 6 seconds of engine time was approximately 6 seconds of wait time, which was fairly ok. But now it seems to take *forever*.
I'm exaggerating - but have you clocked the response times? It definitely feels like less performance than before. Finally - before the changes the auto-refresh was fairly prompt after the engine finished. It no longer feels that way. Have you checked that feature? And what about having a MPV=3 option for users?

 | | Check It Out: <Steve> Bringing up the problem of CG font size on cells again. <Susan> said you would look into it at the CG forum. I read CG ~90% on my cell which is Samsung / Android, and the font size on forums ranges from good to fair to poor. There is a lot of variance:
On chess game forums, the font size fits into the cell screen just right with no adjustment; the size is readable and no L-R scrolling is necessary. This is perfect. Carlsen vs Nepomniachtchi, 2024 On other forums, say for example the 2024 WC blitz, first you have to decrease the page size on the screen, but then it's readable with no L-R scrolling. Okay. World Blitz Championship (2024) On personal forums like mine or other users, the font is very small so then I have to increase the font size by expanding it until it fits the entire screen. It's just about readable at that size with no L-R scrolling, though smaller than on a game page. Not ideal. jnpope chessforum Finally on other forums, such as the CG forum or Kibitzers Cafe, the font size is tiny, unreadable. But when you expand it to an appropriate size you then have to scroll L-R to read. This is the worst, and I typically will avoid those pages. The Kibitzer's Café Can you explain this variety in quality? Is it fixable for a consistent experience on the CG website? I think this should be a fairly high priority for CG. I bet cell phone traffic here is greater than laptop/desktop use. |

 | | stevemcd87: <Re Fen Analysis>:
We've upgraded our Engine to start a server when a request is made, rather than have a server on stand-by waiting for requests. This has drastically reduced costs for CG.
It seems to take upwards of 20 seconds for the Engine to begin its analysis, which is not ideal for a 6-second fen analysis. We will make an update to have a server on stand-by for all 6-second fen analysis so it can begin the process immediately.
Currently, users need to manually refresh the analysis to check for updates to the analysis. We will update the page to automatically check-in on the analysis so users won't have to manually. <And what about having a MPV=3 option for users?>
6 and 15 second analysis = 1 MPV
1 minute analysis = 2 MPV
6 minute or more analysis = 3 MPV
*6 minute or more analysis are now using 8cpu for a noticeably better analysis. <https://www.chessgames.com/nodejs/a...
I got variation #2 as a copy of variation #1.> The analysis was done before the upgrade, it shows <analysis by Stockfish 11>. New analysis shows <analysis by Stockfish 17> ( https://www.chessgames.com/nodejs/a... ). Perhaps we'll figure out a way to fix previous analysis in the future. <CIO>
Sorry for the delay and thank you for the elaboration.
I believe the issue is when the mobile-version is not being displayed.
Do any of the pages with the issue have the "Mobile Version"(https://www.chessgames.com/chessima...) logo on the top of the page, or all they all the current desktop-version logo ( https://www.chessgames.com/chessima...)?
Though, if that is the case, I don't believe it was due to any recent changes.
If it has been existing issue, it may take a while for us to get to.
If you believe it is an issue that arose from a recent update, I will further investigate.
Sorry for the inconvenience. |

 | | Tabanus: Steve, the <Updates all PGNs> section in the Editor tools (TID pop-up form) has update Site and EventDate entries. Perhaps you or <beatgiant> could add an <Update Event> entry to this part of the form to allow for changing the event name for all the games in a TID? If not too risky. Doing this one by one game is simply too much. |

I was able to click the <Update Player Page> button, on the bottom of the player page, for it to be updated.
It seems we have a few edge cases where the auto-update doesn't work, for this we have the <Update Player Page> button.
Eventually, we'll update the code to handle these cases.
<NOTE:> I noticed the message updates are on the top of the page after clicking the button. |

 | | Stonehenge: I know of these buttons. Do you expect me to go through tens of thousands of players that have a FIDE player card? And update them all manually? The data should be <automatically> retrieved from FIDE. It used to be like that until a few years ago. Say I've never heard of CG before and I stumble upon it by searching for a certain player. When I see <1880> when I know it's <2405>, I wouldn't bother using CG any further because I would think the site isn't maintained anymore (and I wouldn't be too far off). |

 | | Stonehenge: <players that haven't been auto-updated> All players. Tens of thousands of them. This https://ratings.fide.com/ is always slow at the last day of the month.
