   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Jan-06-19 Anand vs Fedorowicz, 1990 (replies)

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-05-19 Wesley So (replies)

Domdaniel: Wesley is a man of his word. Once again, I am impressed by his willingness to stick to commitments.

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: <Deffi> No, I'm not and never really have been a Genesis fan. These days, I only listen to Scott Walker, John Cale, and Bach (as interpreted by Glenn Gould, ideally).

Slightly broader taste in the past also included The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, Captain Beefheart, Alberto y Los Trios Paranoias, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Nico, Joni Mitchell, The Sewing Room, The Only Ones, Zappa, kd Lang, Orb, Neil Young, Eno, Laibach, Rossini, Etron Fou Leloublan, Elvis Costello, John Prine, Princess Tinymeat, The Virgin Prunes, The Velvet Underground, The Doors, The Kinks, Syd Barrett, Ute Lemper, Johnny Cash, John Cooper Clarke, The Divine Comedy, Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, Soft Machine, Matching Mole, The Temperance Seven, John Dowie, John Otway (for 'Beware of the Flowers cos I'm Sure They're Gonna Get You, Yeah') and, um, at an even younger age, the likes of Jethro Tull, Lindisfarne, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, and ... Neil Diamond.

I'm sure I've forgotten many more. I've seen a lot of these play live, but I've met relatively few of them. A handful of interviews, maybe. And I lived with a couple of the more obscure ones. But I can't really pretend to have had much personal contact with the music world.

And it's still the only significant artform that I refuse to write about. In case my iggernance shows.

Vanity, my deah, vanity.

jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> do you have me on <ignore> like <Whiteshark> does?

Ok, I'll start over.

"G'day Dom, wonderful to have you back."

Maybe I shouldn't just barge into a party and start screaming at people, like I do in "real" life.

Domdaniel: <Deffi> There is a very simple and non-cryptic reason why <mack> is the mysterious <m> -- check his profile and you'll see why, I suspect.

By analogy, <OD> would only work in your case if your "real" name happened to be Orison Delany, or Oberon Diwali, or Omicron Diogenes, or Otranto Dracula, or ... see what I mean?

Domdaniel: <Jess> G'day. But don't leave yet, I've got simply mountains of correspondence to wade through here. And, as you know, I'm a retard among waders. Slow-wing, they called me, the old shags and cormorants, back in the birdy days.

"Is it weakness of intellect, Birdy?"

"Aye, it is."
