Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

   Jun-10-22 L T Magee vs E L Holland, 1948 (replies)

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

   Jun-06-22 W Ritson-Morry vs G T Crown, 1947

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: OK, my memory is exhausted from all this jogging (Birdie Tebbets!) Time to cheat:

May-18-09  Jim Bartle: Watched Mets-Giants last night. How about this guy on the Mets: Angel Pagan.

The Giants closer is Brian Wilson. It'll be fun, fun, fun to watch him all summer long. Wouldn't it be nice to listen to the games in my room? When he comes into the game does he tell the manager, "Don't worry, baby"?

playground player: Wow! That Retrosheet is something else! BTW, I finally remembered Brennan's name around midnight last night.

<Jim Bartle> Living all my life in New Jersey, I was deprived when my beloved Giants moved to your neck of the woods. The games from Seals Stadium used to be on the radio here in NJ, but after 1961 there was no more Giants radio out here. So by the time Tito Fuentes came along, I had to rely on the newspapers, the Sporting News, and the Baseball Register (published annually by TSN). It was the Register that gave Fuentes' nickname as "Parakeet."

Next question: what ever happened to that unpopular Giants' mascot, The Crab?

May-18-09  Deus Ex Alekhina: About 15 years ago, I was in a bookstore & the owner & client were speculating whether the Polo Grounds were in Harlem. Any guesses? And how about an All Ski Team: Yazstremski, Mazerowski, Trazewski, Bilinski? Bilinski can be also on an All Alliterative Team: Bo Bilinski (BB), Mickey Mantle (MM), etc. Bilinski can also be on a Married to a Movie Star team along with DiMaggio, but who else?
May-18-09  Jim Bartle: Did Belinsky marry a movie star or just date several?

There have to be a lot of ballplayer-movie star matches. Leo Durocher and Laraine Day jumps to mind. Chuck Finley and Tawny Kitaen. Kris Benson's wife is not really an actress, more a pinup model. Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra (oops, wrong sport). Charlie "Wild Thing" Sheen and Denise Richards. Nuke LaLoosh and Susan Sarandon.

May-19-09  Jim Bartle: Here's a confusing headline from ESPN:

"Brewers lose Weeks for year"

Phony Benoni: Could have been worse. They might have lost <Pea Ridge Day>.

Sort of a 1920s version of Mark Fidrych, but with an even more tragic ending: http://thedeadballera.com/Obits/Obi...

May-19-09  Jim Bartle: Headline I'm waiting for:

"Brewers lose Years for weeks."

Phony Benoni: Here's the perfect player for the Brewers: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Him, or the infamous Milt Famey. Know that story?

May-19-09  Jim Bartle: Milt Famey? Is that the joke "It's the beer that made Milt Famey walk me?"

I feel like a kid again.

May-19-09

Phony Benoni: That's it, though I knew the punch line at "Milt Famey walk us." But it probably means I don't have to go into the one about Beethoven's Choral Symphony. Bad jokes travel faster than swine flu.
May-19-09  Jim Bartle: You're right, I screwed it up. I wonder how many people today know the Schlitz slogan, which was ubiquitous in the 60s.
May-19-09  Jim Bartle: "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous"

Phony Benoni: You write faster than I can unpost and repost! Yes, I looked it up. It probably shows something about me when I can remember a joke about the slogan but not the product.
May-19-09  Jim Bartle: I'm fast because I have lots of work to do, and you've got to be quick to avoid doing anything productive. Actually I'm heading out in a minute with my 16-year-old screaming banshee (daughter) to see the Jonas Brothers (AGAIN) tonight. (Earplugs--check. Blinders--check.)
May-20-09  Jim Bartle: Dontrelle seven innings, no runs vs. Texas. a big-hitting team! Retired 17 in a row. Let's hope he's back.

Phony Benoni: Yes, Willis was fantastic last night. While I'm still a bit skeptical, you have to root for him regardless of what he could mean to the team.

I was surprised that your experiences last night didn't make it into the Sacrifice Explorer. On the other hand, some day when your daughter has to take her own banshees to a Jonas Brothers reunion concert, you can present her with the earplugs and blinders as a Cherished Family Heirloom.

May-20-09  Jim Bartle: Aha, the sacrifice explorer!

But my daughter really loved it, and that was worth a lot.

My comment on the Jonas Brothers show on the Travis Bickle music forum has stopped the page cold. Nobody else has kibitzed there for two days.

Phony Benoni: That happens to me often. I like to think it's because my pronouncements are sufficiently authoritative to end all possible discussion.
May-23-09  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni> Do you think The Black Hawks who are 6-1 at home in the playoffs will win the next one?
May-23-09

Phony Benoni: <Travis Bickle> I'm worried. The Red Wings have not dominated any of the games, and the goal tending has been a bit shaky.

But then, I'm a pessimist. That way, I never suffer unpleasant surprises.

May-24-09  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni> I fear Detroit the Red Wings always have a great hockey team!

Phony Benoni: <Travic Bickle> Ha! You should have been around here in the 70s and 80s when they were known as the "Dead Things".
May-24-09  Jim Bartle: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Red Wings benefited greatly as the first team to make intellligent use of the Russian and other European players when the NHL allowed them to play.
