Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: After smackin' (3) homers; two of them in the same inning yesterday, A. Beltre hit for the cycle today.
Aug-24-12  Jim Bartle: I heard some incredible stats for Beltre over the last few days. Something like 5 homers and 12 hits in 18 at bats.

But did you know, ol' Hoss Radbourn started 27 games for his baseball team?

Well, no big deal you say, but ol' Hoss started those 27 games in a row!

Phony Benoni: I don't know all the gory details, but it's probably a matter of their clearing waivers first and there is no doubt some sort of Gentlemen's Agreement involved. "You don't mess with my waiver deal, and I won't mess with yours."

There may also be the possibility of other teams not wanting to pick up the contracts.

perfidious: Trades can even be made after 31st August, though they're rare; the snag is that players acquired in September are ineligible to appear on that team's postseason roster.

playground player: <Wannabe> Old Hoss Radbourn! Wow, it's been a while since I've seen that name invoked.

The Old Hoss deserves his spot in the Hall of Fame; but let's remember that, back when he was toiling away, some pitchers were still pitching underhand and the curveball and the screwball had not yet come into general use. It wasn't exactly the kind of pitching that you had by Smoky Joe Wood's time ("keep throwing until the arm doesn't hurt anymore").

Phony Benoni: And Radbourn stood only 45 feet from home plate. Nevertheless, the strain had an effect on him and all contemporary pitchers. I haven't checked this carefully, but Cy Young may have been the first to pitch regularly for even 15 years, not to mention the 22 he did last.

Aug-26-12  hms123: For anyone who missed it yesterday, the Little League US Championship game was one of the all-time best (most exciting) baseball games I have ever watched. This was made even moreso because the players were actual skinny little regular kids (12 and 13) playing their hearts out (both sides). Here's a link: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/highs...

WannaBe: Information courtesy of San Francisco Chronic(le)...

Oakland A's recently got their compensation for playin the opening series in Japan vs. Seattle, each player received 42,000 dollars. (Wow, talk about slow paper work.)

Tampa Bay and Oakland wrapped up their series yesterday, with Oakland winning the season 5 games to 4, if they are the 2 Wild Card Teams, the 1 game play-off would take place in Oakland.

So, you ask, the 2 teams don't play today? Yes, that is correct, because Republican National Congress is taking over Tropicana Field.

One Elephant leaves (A's symbol) another Elephant enters the room. (GOP)

How cute.

Aug-26-12  Jim Bartle: The Republicans are going to prepare the site for their convention in one day? Amazing.

Nothing to do with Republicans, but Tampa's ballpark has to be the ugliest in the majors.

Aug-26-12  Shams: <WannaBe> From a San Jose Mercury News piece on "Spaceman" Lee's game:

<So continued a week of nostalgia for Lee, who traveled to Boston on Monday to attend the funeral of former second baseman Johnny Pesky, a beloved member of the Red Sox family.

Lee said that when his cab from Fenway Park pulled up curbside for services, he noticed a New York Yankees fan in the car behind him.

"So I flipped him off," Lee said.

Wait. At a funeral?

"Johnny would have wanted it that way," Lee explained.>

Aug-27-12  Jim Bartle: Here's the top half of the first inning of the 23-22 game between Philadelphia and Chicago in 1979:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXkr...

Phils scored seven in the first, as the wind was clearly blowing out. Randy Lerch hit a home run, which must be one of the few times a starting pitcher hit a homer before throwing a pitch.

Lerch then went out and got one out while giving up five runs and was out of the game.

11 homers total, 3 by Kingman, 2 by Schmidt. The one on the video is just a fairly routine fly which the wind carried out.
