Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Giants will be 7½ behind the Dodgers, but with those two you never know.

NL Central getting a little more interesting with St. Louis losing three straight to Cincinnati while Pittsburgh keeps winning.

Colorado now out. After Milwaukee and Miami depart, looks like Oakland and San Diego will be next after a few more days.

Tigers may be able to avoid Division elimination this weekend after all. They keep getting rained out. Best stretch they've had for a while.

And, in other action: Michigan 2, Oregon 0.

Sep-13-15  Jim Bartle: Big Ten has been smashing the Pac 12, 4-1 the past two weeks. I think the home team has won every game, but still, 4-1 is pretty good.

Penguincw: Toronto loses 5-0, ending the Jays' run of winning 10 straight games when Dickey starts.

No big deal, still a 4.5 game lead, magic number 17.

The only other game to have finished so far (WAS-MIA) also ended 5-0...

Tomorrow, the Yanks head to Tampa (who still think they can make the postseason), while on Tuesday, Toronto visits Atlanta. :D

Bungles 10, Traiders 0. Sounds like 2014, or 2013, or 2012, or 2011, or 2010, or 2009, or 2008, or 2007...

Been a long decade for Traiders Fans.

Phony Benoni: Miami and Milwaukee bit the dust today. Next to go, probably later this week, will be Oakland (DIV 4, WC 6), Arizona (DIV 6, WC 6), and San Diego (DIV 4, WC 4).

to clinch their Division:

Kansas City: 11
Mets: 11
Dodgers: 13
Torogno: 17
St.Louis: 18
Houston: 19

I think Mets will be first; they're playing better than KC right now, and have only Washington to worry about.

To clinch at play-off spot, AL:

Kansas City: 11 (DIV or WC)
Totonto: 13 (WC)
Yankees: 17 (WC)
Houston: 18 (WC)
Texas: 20 (WC)

Minnesota, Cleveland, Angels all within 5 games of the WC.

Mets: 11 (DIV)
St. Louis: 6 (WC)
Pittsburgh: 9 (WC)
Cubs: 13 (WC)
Dodgers: 13 (DIV or WC)

Only team with any chance to break into this group are Giants, but they're 7.5 out in both DIV and WC with about twenty games left.

Sep-14-15  Jim Bartle: WHAT are those uniforms the 49ers are wearing? How can I support a team that looks like that?

And the Niners have Reggie Bush now? I need to pay attention, need to know at least the players who aren't under indictment.

Penguincw: Rays couldn't hold the 1-0 lead, and the Yanks gave a half game. 20 games to go, Toronto has a 4 game lead. Simply being just 11-9 will force the Yankees to play 0.750 baseball.

Of course, other games Blue Jays fans may be watching are the DET-MIN game (cheering on the Tigers, who are losing 7-0), KC-CLE (cheering on Cleveland, leading 8-3) and HOU-TEX (3-3).

Sep-14-15  Jim Bartle: <Well, they are located closer to San Jose than to San Francisco. Now =))>

Don't get me started. From what I read the new stadium is just waaaay too luxurious, even has wifi throughout. That's not right for football. Lambeau Field is right for football.

OK, blocked FG, returned 70 yards. That's punishment for the uniforms.

Phony Benoni: That HOU-TEX series is a big one that could really shake up AL West and wild card races. Other WC teams surely rooting for Houston.

Tigers rooting for any team that plays Oakland, hoping to stay out of last place in the league.

Mets take another step forward; KC continues to stumble.
