Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Mar-13-07  Knightlord: <mack: Of the millions upon squillions of games of chess this world has seen, it is Nezhmetdinov vs Ujtelky, 1964 that I'd have most like to have played and won.> Yes, after move 18 all black pawns are on the sixth rank. Strange game by Count Ujtelky.

Domdaniel: <Eyal> Yes, I'm a big Lem fan -- not just Solaris but the more Borgesian texts like Imaginary Magnitudes. He's also written reviews of imaginary books and other trans-generic things.

But I only read recently that (a) Phil K Dick wrote to the FBI about Lem, suggesting 'he' was actually a commie plot and probably a committee rather than one person; and (b) there was serious invective in both directions between Lem and the science fiction writers of America...

As Tal said in another context: "The State versus Vodka? I'm with Vodka."

So I'm with Lem, basically. Even though he disliked *both* film versions of Solaris.

Oddly enough, the novel on which Tarkovsky based Stalker -- for me, his best film, though it's close -- was Roadside Picnic by the Russian Strugatsky brothers. It's closer to mainstream/generic, but it's also very good. And it's fascinating to read a cold war Russian novel set in Canada.

Domdaniel: <mack> Hmm. I'd probably opt for the relative sanity of Nimzo's immortal Zugzwang game, myself, but the Nezh-Ujtelky affair is indeed strange and wonderful. I'd love to know when it first dawned on White that he might actually lose.

That psychological angle is usually missing from the bare score, though I've seen games where both players were utterly convinced they were winning/losing.

I'm also surprised, reading some of the kibitzing, by the extent to which some people seem affronted by such openings.

<Jess> The Greenaway material is in the *still exists someplace but not readily accessible* category. I put it away about ten years ago, having vaguely discussed with him the possibility of writing a book about his work... and then decided not to, or got interested in something else. I'll dig for you, though.

Domdaniel: <Connections, connections>: it wouldn't seem right to exclude Montreal's finest, Leonard Cohen:

<One of the lizards
was blowing bubbles
as it did pushups on the tree trunk
I did pushups this morning
on the carpet
and I blew bubbles of Bazooka
last night in the car
I believe the mystics are right

Re: <Leonard Cohen>

<when they say we are all One>

Perhaps dangerously close to the Chant that <Charlie Manson> led his followers to sing?

They would hold hands in a meadow, forming a circle, and revolve, while <Charlie> led them to sing this litany over and over:

(suitably cheery/ominous melody):

<One, and One, is One>.

Rather than <Two>, of course.

Question: Who would you rather have destroy the perniciousness of <positivism>: <Cohen> or <Manson>?

And is there a difference?

I need to know...

Domdaniel: <Synchronicity City> Thanks to Jess's Hippo, I found the Ujtelky reference. Thanks to <percy> and then <mack> I discover Ujtelky's games. Thanks to <chessgames> I've just downloaded a pile of them -- where he plays *white*, just to be perverse...

Well, um, Cohen's <The Future> had that line about <all the lousy little poets coming round tryin' to sound like Charlie Manson/ And the white man dancin'>.

There's a difference. <Vive> it.

Petition your democratic gummint to have The Ent Thing adopted as Canadian Public Policy and all your troubles will vanish. If all else fails, say 'funk the gummint' repeatedly until deported to Buffalo. Or Springfield.

Crabbe, eh? I spotted you for one of them Toons right away, Buster ... you know what they say: <Forget the lobster, honey, I'm coming home with the crabs...>

Domdaniel: <Knightlord> -- <So Ujtelky was a Hippocrite?> Maybe he was, or maybe he just had a way of making his opponents swear Hippocritic Oaths.

Either way, I reckon Hippo-critter-ness or Hippo-criticality is a virtue.

What's all this about Ujtelky being a Count? As in Dracula? Or Alberic O'Kelly de Galway?

Mar-13-07  mack: <So Ujtelky was a Hippocrite?>

Aye, a hippocritic oaf.

Mar-13-07  Knightlord: <Dom><What's all this about Ujtelky being a Count? As in Dracula?> Yes, Ujtelka sounds a bit Transylvanian doesn't it? And then this obscure way of playing. I don't know, it gives me the creeps. Sorry count if you read this, I'm just being silly. (btw, where's my flaming garlic?)

Domdaniel: <Knightlord> So Uitelky's playing career in the database covers the years 1948-78. If he's working to some sort of 30-years-on, 30-years-off routine, then he should return next year, aged about 93.

Good to see, btw, that he got the IM title at the age of 46. There *is* hope, there *is*...

jessicafischerqueen: they just discovered <dracula's castle> a few years ago. First, it's not really HIS castle- he was imprisoned there for two weeks.

Second, nobody in <Transylvania> ever heard about Vampires until <Coppola's> film version came out.

Well, they wouldn't have, would they? After all, Bram Stoker was Irish. All that Transylvanian tosh was just a blind to stop the local vampires from getting him...

Domdaniel: <Ujtelky> Investigations, contd. Our hero's great hippocratic victory over Nezh was in the tournament's first round. Eleven games later, he repeated the opening against Boris Spassky.

Spassky was usually merciless in crushing opening experiments -- cf his famous 1970 game with Larsen -- but here he seemed just as flummoxed as Nezh. Ujtelky was doing fine until he blundered a rook on move 25. Ironically, if he'd played 25...Qg8 instead, offering a deliberate exchange sac a la the Nezh game, he'd have got massive counterplay.

Moral: hippos are tough, but try to avoid blunders.

Believed to be dynamically equal, but it looks to me like Black is well into the middlegame while White is still fumbling with the opening.

Is that really what it's called?

I'd take Black in that diagram too I think...

(great shot of Drac's castle there...FROGSPAWN is clearly superior to CHESSBASE).

Plus it doesn't Shill for 8000 products they want you to buy.

Incidentally, Have you tried the new FROGSPAWN breakfast cereal?

It's great, but I can't quite bring myself to read the side of the box to see the <ingredients>...
