Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-18-13  waustad: He had an interesting win at Lienz. The other leaders were all late for the final round: http://www.schachportal.at/news-det...
Jul-13-13  waustad: He is tied for the lead among the Austrians at the Styrian Open with 2 rounds to go. He and Georg Fröwis are at 5/7, with 2 at 4.5 and many at 4.
Jul-13-13  waustad: He drew today with Milos Perunovic, the tournament's top rated player.
Jul-16-13  waustad: Congratulations on the GM norm at the Styrian Open!
May-29-14  waustad: He and Robert Kreisl are both playing very well in the Mitropa Cup this year. After 6 rounds, both are on a pace to get GM norms. Kreisl got one last year at the European Championships and he got one at the Styrian Open, though that one hasn't been registered on the FIDE site yet: http://ratings.fide.com/title_norms...

Many norms don't get registered so it is difficult to know what norms people actually have. I never saw any listed for Irina Krush before she got the GM title, for example. I suspect some people don't do the paperwork until they have enough to apply for a title.

May-30-14  waustad: He survived a tough endgame today where he had 2R+N+3P vs Q+B+5P. His performance rating took a hit with a loss a round earlier so even with a final round win tomorrow, he's probably a little short of a GM norm. Veronika Exler and Robert Kreisl would pick up WIM and GM norms with wins tomorrow respectively. Over all the Austrians have played a bit above their expected results. Since most Austrian players have higher FIDE ratings than local ratings, that shouldn't be a big surprise.
Sep-29-14  waustad: I wish a happy birthday to the Austrian IM.
Oct-30-14  waustad: His win over Sandor Horvath (2260) in the Steirische Landesliga contains a neat queen trap. http://chess-results.com/partieSuch...
Apr-05-15  waustad: He and Georg Fröwis are co-leaders after 6 rounds in the Vienna Chess Masters tournament. They are at +2 and are slightly below the performance rating necessary for a GM norm.
May-17-15  waustad: His start in the XXXIV.Zalakaros Chess Festival HUN Open Ch. over 2300 tournament includes a win over Vladimir Onischuk and draws against Matthias Bluebaum and Zahar Efimenko. It is still early, but he is on pace for a second GM norm. http://www.chess-results.com/tnr164...
May-20-15  waustad: A loss to Dennis Wagner in round 6 makes a GM norm less likely, but he is still at 2610 tpr. He'll need more wins.

Penguincw: Followup from <waustad>'s above post: Diermair beat untitled 58th seed Gergo Havasi (2319) with black, but then lost to 17th seed GM Levente Vajda (2554) with white, and 10th seed GM Tamas Banusz (2590) to finish with 5.5/9 and 33rd place (27th seed). His TPR was 2531.

He did gain 4.5 rating points, as he also needs a 2500 rating. He is now at 2492.5.

May-22-15  waustad: Today was not good to the Austrian contingent. Several players came a little short of their desired norms and Markus Ragger drew with tournament winner Igor Kovalenko, leaving him in a tie for second place, third on tiebreaks (on the chess-results list). He had a rook and knight vs a rook, but his opponent managed to kill off the pawns and it drew.
Oct-18-15  waustad: With a win today over David Howell in the European Club Cup 2015, he led a surprise tie between SV RAIKA RAPID FEFFERNITZ (AUT) and CHEDDLETON (ENG). The English team was higher rated on all 6 boards, though on board 2 Peter Schreiner, who also won, was only 7 elo lower.
Oct-20-15  waustad: Too bad this tournament is only 7 rounds. With a win and 2 draws against 2 GMs and a 2530 IM it would be an auspicious beginning towards another GM norm.
Oct-26-15  waustad: He did get a 7 game GM norm, so he'll probably need either an 11 game norm or 4 norms to get to the 27 games needed. I seem to remember that 7 games can be counted as 9 for those purposes in the olympiad, but I don't think that is the case here. It is allowed to be a 7 game norm, instead of the usual 9 game minimum, because it is a Continental Team Championship. His rating qot to very close to the 2500 minimum a while ago, but it has slipped some. This result will help get back some of that elo.
Mar-07-16  waustad: Going into the penultimate round he's one of the leaders in group B of the Aeroflot Open. Although his performance rating so far would be good enough for a GM norm, he won't have played the necessary 3 GMs.
Mar-26-16  waustad: At +2 with 3 rounds to go he has a reasonable chance to achieve another GM norm. http://chess-results.com/tnr209110....
Aug-20-17  waustad: Congratulations on winning the Austrian Championship on tiebreaks over IM Christoph Menezes. http://chess-results.com/tnr274034....
Sep-29-17  waustad: Returning to the prime of life, happy birthday!
Mar-28-18  waustad: He may have gotten the needed final 11 game GM norm at the European Championships. The official Austrian chess blog said he got a 9 game norm and his 1/2 against a 2599 player and a 2623 player should keep the tpr over the minimum. His first opponent was 1999, so that should be counted as 2200 for norm purposes: http://chess-results.com/tnr295754....
Mar-29-18  waustad: Congratulations on achieving the GM title. He should get this at the next FIDE meeting.
Aug-14-18  wordfunph: maybe <waustad> is Austrian..

long live Austrian world champ Steinitz!
