John Michael Miller

John Michael Miller
San Francisco, California

In 1972 The World Championship between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky inspired me to play tournament chess.

I was a member of the Mechanics Institute Chess Club in San Francisco CA in 1972-1973 http://www.chessclub.org/news.php. I was President of the Stockton Chess Cub in 1976.

My highest USCF rating was 1888 when I stopped playing tournament chess in 1981.

My favorite games were played by Robert James Fischer and Mikhail Tal.

My favorite quotes.

"I don't believe in psychology, I believe in good moves"...Fischer

"How does Tal win? - He develops all his pieces in the centre and then sacrifices them somewhere"... Bronstein

Recently chessgames published two of my games:

Szabo vs J M Miller, 1973

R Burger vs J M Miller, 1973

Nov-22-13 Anand vs Carlsen, 2013 (replies)

wanabe2000: In the press conference Mr. Anand said he "missed" 28....Qe1! A very gracious Champion, indeed. Mr Carlsen was magnificent defending in this game.

wanabe2000: <turbo231> Interview from Sports Express: Question to Vladimir Potkin. "In the last round you played with the famous Judit Polgar, who could sometimes beat Kasparov and Kramnik and Ivanchuk, and other prominent players. While you were white, but in the performance of ...

wanabe2000: At the 2011 European Individual Championship (Mixed), behind Judit Polgar's third place performance, the best finish by a woman was Yelena Dembo with 6.5/11 points: http://chess-results.com/tnr45941.a... . Congratulations on a fine show!

   Mar-30-11 J Polgar vs G Guseinov, 2011 (replies)

wanabe2000: A great, instructive endgame game from Judit Polgar. I didn't know how she would win, but when she entered the bishop ending with 21.Rc1 I thought she knew how. "Judit Knows Her Endgames" See: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

   Feb-20-11 J Ambroz vs H Suri, 1993

wanabe2000: Black blunders into mate in an advantages position with 34....Nd4?? 35.Qf8+. My interest was what should Black play 11...Nd4 or 11...Ne7 which looks slightly better.

   Feb-03-11 D Sermek vs P Morten, 2003

wanabe2000: Well played <Benzol> finding the resource 37...e4. Trying to lock the position with 37...f4, which I looked at, seems to lose after 38.e4 and Black must give way.

Jan-07-11 Ivanchuk vs Morozevich, 2011 (replies)

wanabe2000: <Sparta> I think you are rightt. Moro seemed to go for the ending and Ivanchuk was up to the task. Difficult ending for sure but at this level all should be able to figure it out. How about Judit Polgar executing the mate blindfolded. Ljubojevic vs Judit Polgar, 1994

   Dec-28-10 S Nakas vs L Elkin, 2010 (replies)

wanabe2000: Why not 11. Nxc6 bxc6 12. Nxd5 bxd5 13. Qxd5 winning a pawn?

   Nov-29-10 Ivanchuk vs J Polgar, 2010 (replies)

wanabe2000: On move 94.Qh3# 1-0 if the game score is correct. Reported in Chessdom http://reports.chessdom.com/news-20...
