gmann: I see why I was having so much trouble now - I had assumed that the English Attack was related to the English opening when in fact they're quite different.

   Dec-10-04 T Mok vs Korchnoi, 2004 (replies)

gmann: Alive and kicking indeed! I've been playing the French for ages and I've never seen a pawn structure like this. Korchnoi offers us no spectacular sacrifices or breakouts...he simply squeezes tighter and tighter toward the end. Who ever said closed positions were no fun :)

   Aug-17-04 A Aleksandrov vs Adams, 2002 (replies)

gmann: Not to take anything away from 22...Bxg2, but a better continuation for Alex would be to capture on f4 and force the exchange: 23...Ng4! 24.Qxf4 Nxf4+ 25.Kg3!? Nxd3 26.Kxg4 (NxR 27.RxN) leaving White with a slight piece advantage (which, despite the battered pawn structure, is better ...

   Aug-16-04 L Christiansen vs Speelman, 1979 (replies)

gmann: By move 12 Speelman has a slight advantage - better development and a stronger pawn structure. Since there is no nearby threat to the king, however, castling could have been put off for a move or two to allow the knight to capture on c4. This would have left White with a weaker ...

   Aug-16-04 S Knott vs Speelman, 1978 (replies)

gmann: 8.e5 deserves a '??' the obvious 8.f3 (but NOT 8.a3?!, for 8...Bxc3 9.bxc3 fxe4 loses the exchange) would have equalized the pressure on the e4 pawn. Poor Knott was on his heels almost from the outset. Definitely a fun game to watch.

   Aug-16-04 Speelman / Keene / King / Forbes vs Kasparov / Short, 1993 (replies)

gmann: 47.Bxb7 seems like a waste. I can't believe that White didn't see the impending mate, which makes me wonder why they didn't move the rook to g1 (which would force some extra manoeuvering on Black's part) to buy a little time. If, in White's opinion, mate was inevitable, then why ...

   Aug-08-04 Huebner vs Miles, 1977

gmann: <refutor> A nice example is Donner - Miles 1978.

   Aug-06-04 K Spraggett vs Yakovich, 2001 (replies)

gmann: I don't understand 50...Qd1+ Why on earth didn't Yak capture the Queen and fork the King and Rook?! Anyone?

   Aug-05-04 Hodgson vs I Rogers, 1989 (replies)

gmann: wouldn't 21. a4 solve the b4 problem (albeit crudely)? it still costs Hodgson the knight with 21...b4 22. Rd3 (to avoid 22. Rc4 Be6 losing the rook as well). but at least the a-file would be blocked and there would be some fight left for White.

Aug-04-04 Lautier vs Kramnik, 1993 (replies)

gmann: after 46...Ra8, White still has play with 47.Bc5 Nb5 48.Ne7+ Kf7 49.Nc6 at which point, depending on Black's play, White can bring his king into a more active central position.
