Apr-06-24 Lasker vs Steinitz, 1894 (replies)

Capacorn: I wish people would just stop citing computer analysis for these amazing historical games as criticism for the moves. The great Lasker managed to down the founder of modern chess as if it were a blitz game. As Kasparov himself observed, these kind of moves would not be understood ...

   Mar-11-24 Rubinstein vs Bogoljubov, 1922

Capacorn: < rmdalodado: This is given as Game # 16 in Chernev's book Golden Dozen: The Twelve Greatest Chess Players of All Time. It is one of the nine games chosen by the author to feature Rubinstein which he considered as the 11th in the list. The book was published in 1976. ...

   Dec-08-23 G Thomas vs Rubinstein, 1922

Capacorn: I’m surprised this gem hasn’t gotten more attention. Rubinstein plays a splendid attacking game here, full of unexpected moves! Kmoch’s notes in the classic Dover paperback are excellent. Akiba was powerful in every aspect of the game. What a player!

   Nov-16-23 Rubinstein vs Teichmann, 1922

Capacorn: <ColdSong: Every Master of today can win a game the way Rubinstein did here imo. So what?> Today’s masters stand on the shoulders of giants.

   Nov-14-23 Rubinstein vs G Marco, 1921 (replies)

Capacorn: Just went over this game (#51) in the classic Dover paperback edited by Hans Kmoch: Rubinstein’s Chess Masterpieces. Akiba is well-known for his positional and endgame genius, but here (as in some other games) he demonstrates tactical brilliance and lust for battle. Really a fun ...

Feb-26-23 Steinitz vs Chigorin, 1892 (replies)

Capacorn: Just came across this fantastic game again in Kasparov’s My Great Predecessors, Part I. Never fails to delight! Chess history is so rich — just teeming with brilliance! What course would the game had taken, had the young lion Chigorin won? He came awful close. Good thing ...

Feb-26-23 Chigorin vs Steinitz, 1892 (replies)

Capacorn: Screw 19. a5! Chigorin was the man! Steinitz was also. What a great match this was. I never knew! Just learning about it now, making my way through Kasparov’s My Great Predecessors, Part I.

   Dec-27-21 Carlsen vs H Bharathakoti, 2021

Capacorn: Of course, the world champion would see this little tactic in a blitz game. Oh, if only… Lol

Sep-04-21 Fischer vs Gligoric, 1966 (replies)

Capacorn: Just got through checking this game out in Soltis’s Bobby Fischer Rediscovered, then reading the comments. I echo the words of many: Hard to believe a player of Gligoric’s caliber would be so easily handled. Really the sort of game I’d expect to see in a blitz match between ...

   Sep-03-21 A Pomar vs Fischer, 1966 (replies)

Capacorn: Truly this game deserves more attention. A very instructive and fun positional effort (generally), with various tactical fine points: connected passed pawns, exchange sacrifice, weak back rank, the power of the bishop pair, etc. Fischer sets up the connected passers as early as ...
