old coot
Member since Sep-15-05 · Last seen Dec-03-14
I live in New York City, have not played tournament chess in over 20 years, and my interest now is almost entirely in playing over GM games. My last USCF rating was 1793, but doubt I could play at that level now.

Nov-13-13 Anand vs Carlsen, 2013 (replies)

old coot: Ginger GM notes similarity to Kramnik-Karpov but there is a big difference in the number of games.

Mar-17-13 Ivanchuk vs Aronian, 2013 (replies)

old coot: <Once: Never mind structure and castling, just fling the pawns forward> In school ever so long ago, I learned about a famous admiral noted for saying: damn the torpedoes Full speed ahead. Then a slightly less long time ago, I played skittles with a friend at the Marshall Club

   Jun-01-11 J Krejcik vs R Muenz, 1911 (replies)

old coot: First, let me admit that I saw neither Ng5 or Ng1. Which is best may depend on the level of the players. If both are just mid-level club players, Ng1 is probably best because your opponent may be so surprised by it that he will resign immediately, thus leaving you in no danger of ...

May-24-11 Grischuk vs Gelfand, 2011 (replies)

old coot: Some of us ONLY read what others have to say. That way we're never wrong.

   May-18-11 S P Johnston vs Marshall, 1899 (replies)

old coot: Patriot and Once:I was told (about 40 yrs ago) that if a player announced a mate and couldn't back it up, he was forfeited. Announcing and then adding the moves to the scored is what I meant when I said "if he played it". Re Sevenseasman's comment about commentator wondering why ...

Apr-18-11 Fischer vs Myagmarsuren, 1967 (replies)

old coot: Scormus: Fischer didn't have Si, but we are not Fischers.

   Jan-11-11 C van Oosterom vs P Hulshof, 2009 (replies)

old coot: <gmalino> I'm with you. Had this been a Monday puzzle I'd have looked for a Q sac & solved immediately. Instead, I spent a couple of minutes looking for ways to get rid of the Nf8 so I could work on Rh7. Only when I saw that as impossible did I find the answer.

Jan-05-10 Falkbeer vs NN, 1847 (replies)

old coot: We can have lots of laughs at poor NN, but as Al Wazir pointed out, he got to play all the great players, and he also has had the chance to attend all of their funerals. How many of us will still be going strong four or five hundred years from now?

Mar-03-09 Grischuk vs Radjabov, 2009 (replies)

old coot: We are all good players, and none of us should ever be doubted. I say the earth is flat, and since I'm a good player (at tiddlywinks) you must not doubt me.

Jan-17-09 Carlsen vs Radjabov, 2009 (replies)

old coot: As a constant viewer and very seldom kibitzer, I'll put in my two cents. Those who (like myself) dislike computer analysis can do what I do, and just ignore posts containing it. There's no requirement to read every post.
