I am a pre-med student at the University of Miami starting fall of '08. I played chess on my school team in high school, second board behind a very strong player. I don't have an established rating for "real" OTB chess, but my FICS rating hovers in the low 1600s. I like playing the Ruy Lopez as white and a variety of things as black, though I tend to do best in the Alekhine against 1. e4. I'm still experimenting with responses to the queen's pawn, but for the most part I play a half-baked semi-Slav.

offtherook: <refutor> Perhaps it's because I only play against fellow patzers, but I don't really run into the Voronezh variation in practice. From my experience in my own games, the exchange Alekhine is where I score best as black. Anyways, if it were that huge a problem, it's always ...

offtherook: <Marmot> Yes, I know the Fischer defense is very solid. I play it against KG myself as black, just to close up the position and annoy gambiteers. As White, I always preferred to play Bc4 before d4, and I didn't generally retreat my knight back to its starting square. To my ...

offtherook: Sergei Rublevky's bio: <he has never been able to string enough consistent results together to raise his rating past the 2700 mark> He's been over 2700 (albeit not by much) for months now. Isn't it time to correct this point in his biography?

Feb-21-09 Topalov - Kamsky Candidates Final (2009) (replies)

offtherook: <Kaspablanca: Neither Topalov nor Kamsky cant beat Anand in a match.> It's not out of the question. Topalov is a very strong player, and Kamsky has beaten Anand in at least one match before (although Anand has definitely had more experience since then). Anand certainly has ...

offtherook: <notyetagm> In a WC match, there wouldn't be other games going on for him to wander around watching. Fewer distractions.

Jan-17-09 Van Wely vs Dominguez Perez, 2009 (replies)

offtherook: Was Van Wely giving up and taking the draw, or was he really tired and actually dropped a rook for no reason?

offtherook: Dang, Ivanchuk's getting killed. Shame, he can produce some amazing chess when he's in form.

offtherook: You <never> bring out the light square bishop like that in the Slav. Recipe for disaster.
