Sep-21-22 Polgar vs Anand, 1998
|
johnkr: Much as we'd like to believe that this is a won game after 30 Nd5!, Black still has defensive resources and Anand defends well. It seems that his chance came at move 52 according to engines:
52...Bb6! White can't capture it due to 53...Rd2ch and draw by perpetual. After say 52...Bb6 ... |

Aug-25-21 Botvinnik vs Y Rokhlin, 1927
|
johnkr: 6...Qa5 is probably not best. Most masters these days play 6...b4 instead. After 6... Qa5?! White can come in with Na3 and Nc4; instead keeping his Q at d8, if White goes e4, Black can capture and then meet Qe2 with Qe7. |

Aug-07-21 Jobava vs Giri, 2012
|
johnkr: Engine flags nothing wrong with a White 13 Qxd7, but I Jobava wanted to trade in his advantage for a k-side initiative which he did get -- he produced a lovely game but I also question his idea of giving up a good bishop with 17 Ba6?! Okay it did work but engines also rate White a ... |

johnkr: Great game, very enjoyable, especially the clever win of the piece. Congrats to Sokolov for including it in his book. |

Aug-10-20 Anand vs Kramnik, 2020
|
johnkr: saffuna - Yes nice analysis by King. But he fingers the move 46 Kg3 as a blunder, saying that 46 Kf1 was best. But Stockfish in fact approves 46 Kg3 Ng6 47.Ra7+ Kd8 48 h4! as advantage for White (instead of Anand's 48 Ra8+). |

May-29-20 Morphy vs Anderssen, 1858
|
johnkr: I discovered to my chagrin that the Scandanavian was perfectly sound when my chess engine, Chessmaster 2000 kept playing it against me and always equalizing or better! (when engines got good). I was like "wait a second, you should be busted" but nope. Seems to challenge the notion ... |

Sep-29-19 Radjabov vs Vachier-Lagrave, 2019
|
johnkr: Yes this game really leaves you scratching your head. As SChessvesky said, it seems MVL had an idea of ...Bd7 intending Bc6 but then abandoned it. Otherwise he should have tried ...b6 and ...Bb7 but as it turned out he left his kingside without any defender. I would not say this is a |

May-28-19 Shimanov vs Carlsen, 2018
|
johnkr: drieper -- Yes that's a very nice trick that most people (inc. Carlsen) could miss -- that 45...Bd8 is a deflection that stops the perpetual. |

May-18-19 Dubov vs Giri, 2019

johnkr: Hey I know that chessgames has to support itself by doing advertising but I'm looking at a big sexy booty here. Not appropriate for a chess web site? |

Apr-22-19 Naiditsch vs Svidler, 2019

johnkr: Also like the winning idea, a Queen RETREAT from b2 to b5 -- nice. |
