Oct-05-11 A Baburin vs Topalov, 2011

carl giraffe: nice game. I enjoyed the white pawn pushes to maintain the initiative and keep the knight harassing the black position. I also enjoyed Topalov squeezing in an exchange sac to keep up appearances :D |

Jun-23-11 V Laznicka vs So, 2011
|
carl giraffe: after a quick look through it seems that 32.Bd5 was a nice finesse move that turned a better position into a winning position. (and it's a move i dont think i ever would have found myself unless somebody told me to look for something special) |

May-25-11 H Atkins vs H Jacobs, 1915
|
carl giraffe: well this one is crazy. and a center of the rank smother mate; you don't see that every day ( I think that's the first one I've seen actually) |

Apr-20-11 T Abrahamyan vs R Goletiani, 2011
|
carl giraffe: Even earlier it also looks like 32...Rb1 is winning because the g1 rook is stuck guarding the g2 square.
White looks busted after
32...Rb1
33.Qg5 Rxg1+
34.Nxg1 Rxa2
35.Qg3 Qf1
with the threat of 36...Ra1 and Qxg1 mate. So white will have to scramble to trade Qs and |

Mar-26-11 Karpov vs Kasparov, 1993
|
carl giraffe: thanks Dom! <Looks like Black can play 15.Na4 Rxa4!> I considered Rxa4 but didnt see how powerful the Nc4 continuation was. Seems like all of white's pieces are running out of squares/ fumbling all over one another. |

Mar-23-11 Carlsen vs Grischuk, 2011

carl giraffe: <jmboutiere: 44...Qf7 mate in 3> 44...Qf7 mate in 2 ;) |

Mar-20-11 Carlsen vs Topalov, 2011
|
carl giraffe: I love the Grand Prix in speed games. Especially where the white B is traded for the Nc6. Black's development is often tricky and white can get a fun, easy to play game. Easier I imagine when you can crank out such a great tactical melee as Carlsen. |

Feb-12-11 F Corrales Jimenez vs T Abergel, 2008
|
carl giraffe: took me a few minutes to see but there is a cute draw for Black if white tries 31.Bxf7+ to pick up the Rd6. I knew there must be a reason 2 GMs would leave such a simple tactic like that alone. :) |

Jan-29-11 Smeets vs Grischuk, 2011
|
carl giraffe: can't say that I understand 21.Qd4+
seems like Smeets just really wanted to go into a severely inferior endgame with an awful pawn structure and undeveloped rooks. |

Jan-23-11 Shirov vs Grischuk, 2011
|
carl giraffe: 51.Kb6 and 52.Rd1 with zugzwang are just great.
They are the kind of quiet, but forcing, endgame moves that impress me so much. That little combination was the trick that turned what looked like a won game into a win. And it might make for a nice little puzzle. A change up ... |
