I have been a rated chess player since the mid-1960s and have almost always been class B (last rating 1713). It is safe to say that I am not going to improve much and I no longer play in tournaments. I live in Iowa City, Iowa, where I am a professor of anthropology at the University of Iowa.

anthro: I don't understand the comment about ELO ratings being instituted around 1970. I had a rating as early as 1964 and assume that it was an Elo rating. I certainly remember the name Arpad Elo from that time. This was in the U.S, and perhaps there weren't international Elo ratings until ...

anthro: Could someone explain the reasoning behind 22 ...Bh3? Why did black play this move and why didn't white immediately accept the exchange sacrifice?

anthro: This demonstrates why I am a mediocre player. I am 100 percent sure that in a game I would have found the first two moves and then cheerfully settled for winning the exchange with Nf7ch.

anthro: Like many others, I fell for Q x d1. The correct response by black seems quite obvious once it is shown. It is an interesting question why so many of us missed it. Was it because this was a puzzle and the misleading sequence we all "saw" seemed like a solution to a Wednesday puzzle. ...

anthro: Of course, this one is from 1931 -- the rest are from fifty years later! Perhaps you all should ignore my previous comment.
