May-26-09 Blackburne vs Winawer, 1881

Tom Bird: Very nice drawing trap at the end. It might have worked in a blitz game. |

Apr-13-09 Tal vs Korchnoi, 1958

Tom Bird: Tal must have been in time trouble or something. 33.Qf3 Qb5 34.a4 Qd5 35.Qf4 Qe5 36.Qf3 draw. |

Feb-27-09 Anand vs Grischuk, 2009

Tom Bird: event: Topalov-Kamsky Match. I thought only Topalov and Kamsky played at that event. It is also amazing that Anand and Grischuk played a game with the same moves at Linares on the same day. |

Jan-22-09 M Umansky vs The World, 2009
|
Tom Bird: Slav or Semi-Slav are probably best after d4. I usually play KID myself, but I haven't tried it in correspondence chess. As for 1.e4, why not try French or Caro-Kann? |

Dec-31-08 Smyslov vs Fischer, 1959
|
Tom Bird: Fischer gives no note to 14 ... Bb7 in My 60 Memorable Games. I think this move is a mistake. Nc5 is the best way for black to exploit Bh3 as it prevents white gaining a slight advantage with 15 Bxe6. |

Tom Bird: Anyone looked at 36.Nxe2? |

Aug-19-08 A Nickel vs The World, 2008
|
Tom Bird: Nimzo-Indian and Grunfeld are my two favourites. 1.d4 d5 will lead to a slightly slower game than 1.d4 Nf6, so I think it should be avoided to keep people playing. Nimzo-Indian and Grunfeld both have good records for black and they also have many variations, so he'll have trouble ... |
