Nasruddin Hodja
Member since Jun-02-06
I'm an enthusiastic amateur, to use Kasparov's disdainful phrase. However, I have deliberately avoided the use of computers in my play (I don't have chess software) in order to avoid feeding my chess addiction (I had to permanently swear off FICS in order to finish my dissertation). So my ability to help in team games is therefore limited--please cast a skeptical eye to any kibitzing that I make.

My username, btw, is in memory of the mythical Mullah Nasruddin, the wise fool (or foolish wise man) of Sufi parables.

   Feb-26-25 Music vs NN, 1803

Nasruddin Hodja: Only if he wanted to make the music last... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjI...

Jan-03-25 D Sisior vs Dorji Pema Yangsel, 2022

Nasruddin Hodja: Destiny my ass. Black's 5th and 6th moves were questionable, her 9th was a game-losing blunder, and her 13th allowed checkmate. The fault, dear Brutus, is not in Destiny but in ourselves, that we get crushed.

   Nov-05-24 Caruana vs G Oparin, 2024

Nasruddin Hodja: <perfidious> The fault isn't Kramnik's; he simply confirmed that 3. ... Nf6 is the soundest if most drawish defense against the Spanish. At the highest level, players with the white pieces have become too risk averse to follow up 1. e4 properly with one of: (a) give up

   Aug-29-24 B Harper vs R Zuk, 1971

Nasruddin Hodja: Meh. Since I'm a fan of the classics rather than Halloween references or lame puns (yes, I've submitted my share of the latter), I would go with renaming this game "Antony and Cleopatra". The final position fits.

   Aug-09-24 Tartakower vs H Atkins, 1922 (replies)

Nasruddin Hodja: Of course 8. Bxc6 would have given white a slightly better position, which is why black should have played 7. ... Bd7; 7. ... Bd6 was his only inaccurate move in the game I think. But the real killer was 14. Qa4? He was already going to lose one tempo retreating the Bd5; the

   Jul-03-24 Deep Thought vs D Levy, 1989

Nasruddin Hodja: "Forty-two." ;-)

   Apr-24-24 J Christiansen vs A O Johansen, 2013

Nasruddin Hodja: Toccatta and Fugue in d6?? minor. :-(

Mar-07-24 Nepomniachtchi vs Carlsen, 2020 (replies)

Nasruddin Hodja: <FSR> Oops. I was including "Ian" in the name. My bad. Btw, what kind of a grown Russian man uses "Ian" as a first name? Did they forget to add the "v" between the "I" and the "a" in his birth certificate?

   Feb-19-24 Paulsen / Goring / Metger vs Anderssen / Zukertort / Schmid, 1877 (replies)

Nasruddin Hodja: <Miss Scarlett> They may not have been geniuses, but Paulsen, Goring, and Metger were definitely not nincompoops; each made important contributions to opening theory. Or is there something else in the game title that I'm missing? <goodevans> There's a direct ...

   Sep-25-23 A Manea vs C Nanu, 2001 (replies)

Nasruddin Hodja: Er, I may be missing something, but after 39. ... h3, white seems to stop the h pawn after 40. g4 followed by : (a) 40. ... hxg2 41. Bxg2, (b) 40. ... Rxf3 41. gxf3 h2 42. Ng3, or (c) 40. ... h2 41. Ng3. In each of the three cases, black would then have to play ... Bxb4 on ...
