KnightOnTheRim: < goodevans: Sure, 33.Qxg2? would lose instantly but White has a neat alternative to save the game.>
Does 33 Bc2 save the game? 33 ... Rxb2+ seems sufficient to win. It's not a mate, but is the mate in the game a forced line? |

Jun-19-23 Anand vs Mamedyarov, 2022
|
KnightOnTheRim: Black was already threatening 22 ... Qxf3+ before white's move 22 Qb5. If, say, 22 Re2 then 22 ... Qxf3+ 23 Qxf3 Nh4+ wins a piece since the white king must move and relinquish its protection of the queen. The alternative 23 Kxf3 Nf4++ is of course worse for white. |
