Born 18 March 1931 in Manchester, England.

I learned chess from Lasker's Manuel, and from him discovered Anderssen. I am still drawn to the games of both men. Alekhine was world champion during my youth and I greatly admired his first game collection. Of the Soviet world champions, I warmed only to Spassky. I did rather like several Soviet players who failed to reach the summit: Keres, Boleslavksy, Bronstein (200 Open Games was a favourite), Geller and Korchnoi. Smyslov's 'comeback' at the age 63 placed him in my Pantheon. There are some English players I like as well: Staunton, Blackburne, Penrose, Miles and Speelman.

Kenneth Sterling: One of the cable stations has it scheduled for 10am out here (California) Tuesday morning.

Kenneth Sterling: Having been a youngster in England during the war, I owe them a great deal. What happened to Turing remains a disgrace.

Kenneth Sterling: This may be it. Bronstein vs M20 (Computer), 1963 All of the earlier games I have seen were with programmers and other amateurs.

   Nov-18-03 Milner-Barry vs C H Alexander, 1933 (replies)

Kenneth Sterling: These are two of the four men (along with Alan Turing and Gordon Welchman) who signed the famous 21 October 1941 letter to Churchill which led to their work on Enigma being given extreme priority.

   Oct-23-03 Larry Evans (replies)

Kenneth Sterling: Evans is a really nice guy. He was sometimes in chess clubs which I frequented in New York.

   Oct-22-03 Howard Staunton (replies)

Kenneth Sterling: <I'm not sure anybody else could have played Morphy in this. Okay Anderssen probably, but at this pt in time, who else could have stayed with him, let alone beat him?> Anderssen had a few chances at Morphy. On pure tactics I think of Tal, but do not recall any famous ...

Kenneth Sterling: It is fitting that Mr. Kasparov appear on television. In our culture, those who emerge from the mad scramble for money and fame are rewarded with that distinction. I understand the man and woman in the street now also have some opportunities other than as game show ...

   Oct-16-03 Geza Maroczy (replies)

Kenneth Sterling: Maroczy suffered greatly during the war. He did not come emerge from it with his health intact.

   Oct-15-03 Peter Leko (replies)

Kenneth Sterling: Leko came up at a lunch with a retired gold broker from South Africa. He was certain that the Petrosian Leko married was the daughter of his trainer, and not related to the late world champion.

   Oct-12-03 Boris Spassky (replies)

Kenneth Sterling: I dislike defending Fischer, but your statistics are specious. All four of Tal's wins came in one event when Fischer was but a lad. I think the Curacao collusion was demonstrated beyond reasonable objection long ago. How one judges the participants, who were not free ...
