   Aug-03-23 C Hartlaub vs Wielandt, 1920 (replies)

Fiddlerookie: I tried 14. Ng5 which I thought of as a more cautious transposition preparing for the text's Bf7+ which then becomes the mate that must be interfered with at all costs. Stockfish calls that move mate in 7 (not 8 as <Redfield> says, to quibble) but overall it's remarkable ...

   Jul-25-23 W Spoelman vs E Agrest, 2017 (replies)

Fiddlerookie: Nothing to add in content but at least I can make some songwriterly game title suggestions: "Wouter Router" ? "A body Agrest..."?

   Feb-09-23 O Sarapu vs B J Halpin, 1962

Fiddlerookie: <Arlekhino> Belated thanks for the explication. I understand Brenin's point better now as well. As a musician, I'm fascinated by rhese inflection points where transposition of moves makes all the difference.

   Jan-30-23 D Prelevic vs P Orlov, 2001 (replies)

Fiddlerookie: The position given for POTD wasn't hard even for me to see after a few distractions. The really subtle move by Black which I can't imagine finding on the board is 21...Re2 : seeing the vulnerability at that unguarded square and the roundhouse blow that R would deliver.

   Jan-14-23 Z Ilincic vs A Savanovic, 2007 (replies)

Fiddlerookie: Like many others here, after seeing the Q sac I leaned toward 17 Rd7+ over 17 Ne6, and Stockfish also rated it the stronger move. But continuing that line of play awhile seemed to lead to a thicket of complications, with an advantage to W but no decisive mating combination. I ...

   Nov-26-22 J Tompa vs J Cuibus, 1973 (replies)

Fiddlerookie: I followed the line after the rook sacrifice pretty well, until 29.Re1 yields tempo for Bl to worry Wh's king with the bishop. I kept thinking there should be a way for Wh to keep a grip on the attack, and avoid the long chase, especially with two bishops to employ. But I ...

   Nov-21-22 A Yegiazarian vs K Asrian, 2006 (replies)

Fiddlerookie: Hi <goodevans> Thanks for the clarifying reply, and sorry for my delayed response . I'm using stockfish 11: but the more embarrassing problem was my misunderstanding the polarity of the negative score :-) (well, that makes a lot of things clearer!) The "puzzle of ...

   Oct-30-22 W Mueller vs K Junge, 1942 (replies)

Fiddlerookie: Good day! I found the ending quite allegorical somehow. Since I just praised the late tpstar for annotating games with lyrics, I thought I'd make my own modest contribution inspired by the end of this game: I am a lonely pawn the weakest piece of all but with one move ...

   Oct-28-22 J Palkovi vs L Kiss, 1988

Fiddlerookie: <Teyss> - thanks for the context and very sorry to hear about tpstar's passing. I would search the archives for other humorous lyric annotations of his, but apparently he kibitzed more than 17000 times.

   Aug-31-22 NN vs F Rhine, 2021

Fiddlerookie: Came to this game as another example of a black version of Legal's mate based on today's puzzle. There are two points of interest for me here. First, Black takes the time to swing the queen's Knight around to kingside to deliver the final blow; an extra move I guess but keeps ...
