He was named 2005 Chess Journalist of the Year by the Chess Journalists of America, and teacher of the week in August 2004 by the San Jose Mercury News. He edited the California Chess Journal from 2001 to 2003, when the magazine won awards for analysis and general excellence; he resumed editing the CCJ in 2010. His second book, "Capablanca: A Primer of Checkmate", was published by Mongoose Press in October 2010.
