   Feb-21-21 Mecking vs S Mareco, 2011 (replies)

AvidChessMan: Spotted it in seconds. Not a Sunday puzzle in my opinion.

   Jan-21-21 A Donchenko vs Caruana, 2021 (replies)

AvidChessMan: After 16. ...exd5 it was obvious how this game was to proceed. Blacks a thru d pawns attack!

   Jul-12-18 N Eliet vs Rozentalis, 2016 (replies)

AvidChessMan: I saw black's last move, 18...Rf6, first. White's d/e/f pawns closed off white's position, while black had multiple pressure points on the white king. Then I figured black's opening salvo had to be a check: 13...Bh2.

Nov-23-16 Karjakin vs Carlsen, 2016 (replies)

AvidChessMan: 23.Ra6 pinned the b6 bishop, preventing it from moving to c7.

   May-25-16 H Weenink vs L Gans, 1923 (replies)

AvidChessMan: <Samagonka: .. My motto is: don't panic!> Is this on the cover of the Hitchhikers Guide to Chess? It seems that black was unprepared for the white king's daring trek.

May-17-16 Ftacnik vs Nunn, 1986 (replies)

AvidChessMan: I can't explain why, but I really liked 31. Nef4 ef4 32. Nf4. I could not see past that. And, I could not see any better options for white. The only reason I can think for 33. Rf2 (which I agree is not a sharp move) is to protect the b pawn and prevent the f4 knight from a ...

   May-17-16 H Heinicke vs P A Seitz, 1934 (replies)

AvidChessMan: I liked 12.d6 right from the start, due to the double threat. The other possible moves are not as sharp. I was surprised by black's quick resignation though.

   May-12-16 E Liu vs S Homa, 2007 (replies)

AvidChessMan: Yes, 27 Rd8+ wins the queen, but she was pinned to the diagonal anyway. Why not gobble up a pawn and give your rook access to Rg4+? This forces black to make the exchange.

May-11-16 Landa vs Vocaturo, 2010 (replies)

AvidChessMan: 34...Bg1 was a bad move, followed by a good move 35.Qd1. At first, I did not see this. If 35...Bxh2, then 36. Qe1 traps the bishop and the following Qf2 will yield a bishop for two pawns exchange.

   May-10-16 R A James vs G Wall, 2006 (replies)

AvidChessMan: The only reason I can see for 12. Na3, is to cover the bishop at c4 and neutralize the black bishop at e6. 12. Nc3 would have freed up the b4 square to the black knight. Instead of 17.Rde1, I like 17.b3 and then Kb2.
