Mar-13-09 Tarrasch vs Steinitz, 1898
|
chopbox: Well, my own conjecture a couple posts ago (that perhaps Tarrasch moved 26. Rf1 because he was concerned with 27. ...Bf6) is pretty clearly wrong too (as 28. Bc5+ pretty much blows that out of the water). So is <mike1> right then that Tarrasch didn't need 26. Rf1? |

Feb-27-09 Tarrasch vs D Baird, 1898

chopbox: <YetAnotherAmateur: No, 30. ... Bd5 doesn't help in the least. (assuming game line up until 30. e6) 31. Rxf8+ Kxf8 (forced)
32. Qxf7#>
Thanks for your quick and spot-on reply. |

Jan-10-09 C Bauer vs Bologan, 2001
|
chopbox: I didn't get it because I couldn't see how Black could profit after 30.Kh3 (instead of 30.Kh1). It looked to me the best Black could do was draw by repetition. Even 30...f4, 31.Rg1 fxe3 32.Bxe4 looked like a draw, but I had ignored 32...Rf4, which seems to do in White. Too far ahead |

Dec-10-08 G Bastrikov vs Shamkovich, 1958
|
chopbox: <Eggman: Black would be up material (R+2P vs 2N), and then goes on to discuss why White nevertheless has the edge. The point of the book is to discuss unusual material imbalances (e.g. Q vs N+N+B), and the contexts that affect the evaluations of such situations.> That would be |

Dec-02-08 N Battulga vs F Firman Syah, 2008

chopbox: Interesting game. Pretty moves all through it that are worth seeing and puzzling over.
It looks to me like White missed a real big opportunity by playing 39.Rxc4 instead of 39.Nxc4. |

Dec-01-08 Timman vs Short, 1990

chopbox: My solution was 26. Qxf5.
Not as pretty; more like a club over the head instead of a thrust through the ribs, but still effective, I think. |

Oct-23-08 Antoshin vs B Rabar, 1964
|
chopbox: Rabar could have played 21...fxe6 instead, which still loses, after 22. Rxf6 Nxf6 23. g5+ Kg7 24. Rf1 . But to my mind, though I suppose some might categorize this line as "fighting chess", I like that Rabar resigned here, ... |

chopbox: Well I can't see anything the matter with 29...Re2 with threats all over the place. What am I missing? |

|
chopbox: <JG27Pyth: I think this line 25...h5 26 Qg4!? Qc4 27.Rg1 Nd5 28. Rxh5 Nxf6 29.exf6 Qe2 holds for black.> Best comment of the day! Thank you. |

Sep-19-08 Eliskases vs L Laurine, 1935
|
chopbox: dzechiel: "But that allows 25 Nd6+ which wins [the] exchange with 26 Nxe8 or the entire bishop with 26 Rxe7+." If 25. Nd6+ Bxd6 26. Rxd7+ Ke6 and Black though worse is not hopelessly lost, is he? Instead of 25. Nd6+, the simpler 25. Rxd7 wins a knight and is threatening more. |
