Pope moved around a lot - he won the 1971 CCLA Territories Championship when he was living in Vietnam. The Territories Championship were for those players who were not part of any state, so players who lived in the Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory and Papua New Guinea were eligible (Papua New Guinea didn't gain independence from Australia until 1975). Correspondence players serving in Australian diplomatic embassies around the world were also eligible to play. Pope was serving in the Australian Army in Vietnam, and was thus considered eligible to compete.
