'.. The beginning of the Second World War prevented Heinz from taking his 2.Staatsexamen*. He was drafted into the Wehrmacht and deployed as a medic. In 1944 he was taken prisoner of war, which he said he only survived because the Russian camp commander was also an enthusiastic chess player. ..'
