[what is this?]

Giuseppe de Biase

Unfortunately, very little is known about the early life of de Biase. He is believed to have been born in Naples and later moved to Florence and Fiume (now Rijeka, Croatia) as a teacher of the sport of fencing.

The chess origins of de Biase are obscure. He emerged from the Fiume coffeehouse chess scene after he scored impressive victories in casual games against Duras and Schlechter. These unexpected triumphs were reported in the Italian chess press and appear to have earned him an invitation to the prestigious San Remo tournament in 1911.

In this, his only international tournament, de Biase, had a disappointing showing, finishing in equal last place with only half a point out of ten games. Contemporary accounts suggest that he may have been in poor physical condition during the tournament.

After the San Remo tournament, there are no currently known further records of his chess activities.
