Father of Mavro Gross. Born in Kislőd, Hungary, died in the Jasenovac concentration camp, NDH (Independent State of Croatia). Croatian chess problemist and cantor for the local Jewish congregation in Karlovac (Karlstadt). A chess pioneer, he co-founded the Karlovac Chess Club and Croatian Chess Federation. In 1912, he organized the first international chess problemist tournament held in the region. Gross was responsible for establishing Croatian chess terminology which has remained in use until the present. His works »Šahovska abeceda« (ABC of chess), 1907 and »Povijest šaha« (History of chess), 1912, are the first publications on chess in Croatian. He was an internationally successful and respected chess problemist who won numerous prizes in competitions, notably first prize in London in 1929, second prize in Amsterdam in 1925 and an honorary award for his contributions in 1926 in Budapest. He became honorary president of the Panslavic Correspondents' Chess Federation in 1930.
