VLASTIMIL BABULA SR
(born Oct-02-1973, 51 years old) Czech Republic

Grandmaster (1997). Czech champion in 1993 and second at the World Junior Championship of 1993. He won at Pardubice in 2003 and 2007. Babula qualified for the FIDE World Championship Knockout Tournament (1999) by coming =1st at the Krynica Zonal Tournament 1.4, but was eliminated in the first round by Tal Shaked. He also qualified for the World Cup (2011) through his result at the European Championship (2010), however, he was eliminated in the first round by Ukrainian super-GM Zahar Efimenko. He has played for the Czech Republic in every Olympiad since 1994, and won an individual bronze medal for the reserve board at the Khanty-Mansiysk Olympiad (2010) in Khantiy Mansiysk. In September 2013, he won the Werder Bremen GM 2013 outright with 6.5/9, a half point ahead of 16 year old German wunderkind, IM Matthias Bluebaum.

He is the father of Vlastimil Babula Jr.
