MissScarlett: Acting on a lead from Harding's Blackburne biography (p.23)...

Manchester Weekly Times, 24th September 1887, p.5:

<THE LATE MR. J. B. PAYNE. - We announce with regret the death of Mr. John Brown Payne, late of Heathfield, Higher Broughton, and senior partner in the firm of Payne, Galloway and Payne, of Brazennose-street, Albert Square. Mr. Payne in July last year met with an accident while playing bowls on the the Broughton Club Bowling Green, when the ligament in one of his knees was ruptured. The injury led to the formation of clots of blood, and his death followed within ten minutes of the bursting of one of these yesterday morning. Since receiving the injury he has been almost entirely confined to the house, but it was not anticipated that it would have fatal results. Mr. Payne was 59 years of age. Some years ago he was well knrown in athletic circles, particularly in connection with football and cricket, and old cricketers still remember his wonderful slow bowling, which was invariably disastrous to batsmen. He was a vice-president of the Broughton Football and Cricket Clubs, and his son, Mr. J. H. Payne, is now a leading player of both games. The deceased was also a well known chess player, and for some years was secretary of the Manchester Chess Club. He was also at one time Vice-Consul in Manchester for the United States of America. He was an ardent Liberal, and one of the oldest members of the Manchester Reform Club, but he did not take a prominent part in politics.>
