Jul-23-09  WhiteRook48: you can't beat a guy named chess
Jul-23-09  Jim Bartle: I wonder if there's a single joke about his name he hasn't heard.

FSR: I wonder if he's played C. Hess - Christian Hess Jr.

perfidious: <FSR> Maybe erstwhile teammate Loren Schmidt would know.

SteinitzLives: Mike had a brother named Rich, they were both strong experts back when they were playing. I'm not sure what happened to either of them after seeing them at some scholastic/junior tourneys back in the 70's.

How could they not play chess and do everything they had to in order to excel with that name!

Glad their name was not Cheese, that would have put them in a completely different direction. Of course they could have changed their names, as did John Cleese.

perfidious: <SL> They, along with Schmidt and (I think) Curtis Carlson (aka <cwcarlson>) won the Pan-Am Intercollegiate in the mid 70s.

On the other hand, there is a popular author on Cracked.com named John Cheese, so perhaps the name isn't as much of a handicap as it might seem.

One learns every day.

But, apparently, it was John Cleese's father who made the change; thus John was already born John Cleese:

<... His family's surname was originally Cheese, but his father had thought it was embarrassing and changed it when he enlisted in the Army during World War I. ... >

Dec-11-14  norami: The Dutch version of John Cheese, which is Jan Kaas, is the ultimate source of the word "Yankee".
Jul-14-16  zanzibar: Inspired by <norami>'s post, I found this elaboration on the matter...

Warning - it's not the matter, as in, what's the matter with chess?

Aug-07-18  wrap99: Mike and Rich were very nice guys who were either expert or low masters pre-rating inflation. Rich (I think) also played football at the college level. Always wondered what became of them. They are from Nebraska, as I recall.
