[what is this?]

Alonzo Wheeler Jerome of Paxton, Illinois, is credited with inventing the Jerome Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+). He played this variation over-the-board and in correspondence play and discussed it in the pages of the Dubuque Chess Journal (1874-1875) and the American Chess Journal. Mar-08-12  brankat: A chess player, an inventor(?) of a dubious gambit, the Civil War veteran, a hemp farmer, an author!

Quite a character was Mr.Jerome! Hemp must have helped while playing "Jerome Gambit" :-)

R.I.P. Mr.Jerome.

Mar-08-12  wordfunph: <brankat> good find!

interesting to note that only 5 games of Jerome Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Bxf7+) in CG dbase, 2 wins for white and 3 for black.

rest in peace, Sir Jerome.

Mar-08-12  SimonWebbsTiger: Gary Lane's chesscafe.com column for March 2012 features some games and theory(!) of the Jerome Gambit.
