Apr-12-06 | | Marmot PFL: Many strong players like to say they never work at the game, but if you spend time with them you see it isn't so. IMHO Capablanca worked as hard as anyone as a young player but gradually lost ambition after making it to the top (not uncommon- Spassky, Smyslov, many others). As far as women's ability, I don't think they differ from men, but (either from culture or genetics) they tend to be more social and less aggressive. So I expect chess will always appeal more to men. (There are girls who like to compete in tennis, basketball, track, etc., but usually for each one there are many more boys competing in the same sports.) |

So does Judit and even more than me. Same goes with Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, Kamsky, etc. Best wishes,

Apr-12-06 | | you vs yourself: <twinlark> I don't think Kramnik knows about Capablanca's work ethic more than you, me or szunzein. He reads the same stuff that we do. I'm not contesting the fact that Capa is a prodigy; most elite chess players are. What I don't buy is that Capa is lazy or doesn't work much on his chess. TO COMPETE AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL, he needs to work his behind off. If he says he doesn't need to, then it's more likely that he's trying to impress his audience than being honest. See Susan's post above for a first hand account about how top chess players maintain their edge for so long. |

 | | Susan Polgar: Chess on New York TV and Internet tonight
Women's Chess World Champion Lives And Teaches The Game In Queens http://www.ny1.com/ny1/content/inde... Once you are on the website, click on the yellow Road Runner Banner to play the video. April 12, 2006
The winner of four Women's Chess World Championships lives in Queens, and she's making moves to try to get more girls to break into this male dominated world. NY1’s Cheryl Wills filed this report. Susan Polgar has competed successfully against some of the greatest chess masters in history, but her greatest joy is playing with young girls like 6-year-old Evelyn Gotlieb. “The parents of the girls are so happy,” says Polgar. “I get so much feedback on how it helps their daughters’ life, their education, their self-esteem, their mood. They are excited about something." Who knew the Queen of Chess was from Queens? The Olympic gold medalist and winner of four World Championships runs the Polgar Chess Center in Forest Hills. The kids who study there are living proof that you are never too young to learn how to play. “The king can go forward and sideways," says Agatha Latek, a 5-year-old chess player. About 65 students roughly between the ages of 5 and 10 get tips from the Hungarian-born Grand Master. Zina Gotlieb says chess is having a positive effect on her daughter Evelyn, who is in the first grade. “She doesn't like to lose, and she's more patient,” says Gotlieb. “She pays attention when she plays." Susan Polgar started her chess club in Forest Hills 10 years ago. When she was a kid, she says she was the only girl in the chess club. Now she's determined to make sure that all girls feel welcome playing the game. “It still is male dominated,” she says, “So many times girls hear, ‘That's not for girls. You can’t do that.’ And I think chess is a wonderful thing to do to prove that there is no physical strength needed. It’s a mental activity, and girls should do it and can do it." Polgar has never been afraid to play with the big boys. One might call her the Tiger Woods of chess. She started playing chess when she was just 4-years-old. She is the author of several books and she has many DVD's which instruct people, both young and old, on how to control the center. She hopes to teach young ladies her mantra: to win with grace and lose with dignity. - Cheryl Wills |

Apr-13-06 | | Zebra: The absence of women in chess clubs is astonishing. I played this season in one of the lower leagues in Germany, and did not see one single woman. This seems all the more remarkable given the recent successes of, for example, Elizabeth Paetz. What do you think is the main reason for this lack of interest? |
|
Apr-13-06
 | | Susan Polgar: Many women do not enjoy the club atmosphere. I have around 40+ female chess players at my club. They would never come and play during general hours with male adults. Many guys trash talk during the game. They enjoy the in your face mentality. Women do not. The prefer the friendly, polite and sociable environment. Many clubs are not very clean and attrative for women. That is why my club is done differently. Many clubs are also not located in very good areas. Many women are uncomfortable being in places like that late at night. Many men constantly hit on female players, making vile or lame comments. Many women find that uninteresting. These are just my opinion and the opinions of some of the female chess players I know. Best wishes,
Susan Polgar

 | | Open Defence: <Susan> spot on!! my chess club when I was a young girl was on a very dimly lit road.... Most of the members would come into the club only after 7 pm the time I was expected back home .. These factors made my parents decide against Chess as a serious activity as far as I was concerned |
|
Apr-13-06 | | brankat: <szunzein> I thought You said a few days ago Your wife had forbbiden You to visit Susan's page, or else she was going to kill You :) But it looks like You are still breathing :) Graet survival skills? |

Apr-14-06 | | samikd: <Many men constantly hit on female players> Lol :) Come on, cut them some slack...chess players have feelings and desires too you know ;) By the way, what level of players is 'Chess tactics for champions' aimed at ? |
|
Apr-14-06 | | twinlark: <chess players have feelings and desires too you know>
I may be wrong but I have the feeling that this is exactly the problem being described. |

Apr-14-06 | | Dr.Fritz: <I worked, and worked, and worked on my game every day since I was 4 :) I still do. So does Judit and even more than me. Same goes with Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, Kamsky, etc.>> This is interesting!
Is this bcoz you are addicted to chess or is it bcoz you love the game. You say Fischer still works on his chess. What is the use when he is not playing, coaching or giving simuls ?
is he planning a comeback ?
Kasparov has quit and is concentrating on politics which requires more time than chess.does he still work on his chess ?
does he still produce brilliant opening novelties ?
what is the use if he is not participating or does he pass on his novelties to other players ? I'm asking this bcoz Topalov's sudden rise was after Kasparov quit!
did kasparov pass all his preperations and novelties ? |

Apr-14-06 | | szunzein: <brankat>I'm so used to play chess (blitz) in a friendly enviroment, in which I usualy say whatever crosses my mind that sometimes I say some idiocies, as you noticed ( there's nothing [or almost] better than playing chess with friends). From now on, everytime I visit this column, there's another window at the bottom of the screen in which there's a picture of France's Great Rabbi. That window can appear on the screen in a blink of an eye. |

Apr-14-06 | | Fluffy: I don't know, Susan. You're good-hearted and are trying to help someone out, but for what it's worth you look pretty hot to me in that picture too. I suppose we'll just have to see what szunzein's wife says. If she goes with it then it's all systems go! :) |

Apr-14-06 | | brankat: Why don't we have both? Actually, Ms. Polgar's current photo is on her avatar anyway. Of course, you realise, the whole thing with <szunzein>' comment has been just a joke :) We all have utmost respect for Susan Polgar. |

Often nobody may even be aware there is a problem because there is nobody to tell them. For that matter it's easy to be reminded about the rough or pure sexist jargon on, for example, the ICC or even here. ("Wow, this is one hot chick, so let me paste hundreds of links to pictures of her. And oh, she can play chess too!") And that disgusting <World Chess Beauty Contest>?! |

Many women are uncomfortable being in places like that late at night.> I'm a guy, and I quit going to chess clubs for the same reasons. <Many men constantly hit on female players, making vile or lame comments. Many women find that uninteresting.> This has been much less of a problem for me. It did happen to me once, while I was at a tournament. I can see how this could get annoying and uncomfortable if it happened a lot. You think people would know how to behave better. I guess they think they're still on a playground, not in a playing hall. |

Change is nice. Apr-14-06 | | sitzkrieg: Come on, lets face it. Most girls dont play at chessclubs cause they will lose 90 percent of their games with guys. Like lego there are just some things that girls, probably and in general, can do/ or maybe like, much less (same goes for boys)
Also I have never ever heard of <Many men making vile or lame comments.>, That may be luck, but it is also possible that the term checkmate is lame to sensetive girls too.
Also never seen men <constantly hit on female players,> Then again, I have very rarely seen "chessgirls" worth hitting on:) |
|
Apr-14-06 | | sitzkrieg: <And that disgusting <World Chess Beauty Contest>?!>
It's not my thing; but why is it disgusting? |
|
Apr-14-06 | | acirce: I think it's degrading and insulting to rate women according to how they look. Or men - but that is part of the point, very few would think about starting such a project and even fewer would take it seriously precisely because we're only used to do it with women. |
