Manuel Golmayo

MANUEL GOLMAYO (born Jun-12-1883, died Mar-07-1973, 89 years old) Cuba (federation/nationality Spain) [what is this?] Manuel Golmayo y de la Torriente (12 June 1883 in Havana, Cuba – 7 March 1973 in Madrid) was a Cuban-Spanish chess master. He was widely regarded as the best Spanish player for the first three decades of the 20th century and frequently referred to as the "Spanish champion" during that time, though no official title existed until 1928. He did not play in international events, however, until the 1920s, devoting himself to service in the Spanish army. Born into a 'chess family' (father Celso Golmayo Zupide, elder brother Celso Golmayo Torriente), he was Spanish Champion on numerous occasions (1902, 1912, 1919, 1921, 1927, 1928) and Sub-Champion in 1929/30 (he lost the title in a match (+1 –4 =2) to Ramón Rey Ardid). In 1922, he lost a mini match to Alexander Alekhine (+0 –1 =1) in Madrid.3 In 1924, he took 8th in first unofficial Chess Olympiad (Championship Final) at Paris 1924 (Hermanis Matisons won). In 1928, he took 4th in the Amateur World Championship in The Hague (Max Euwe won). He played for Spain in three official Chess Olympiads: In 1927, at first board in 1st Chess Olympiad in London (+2 –4 =9); In 1930, at second board in 3rd Chess Olympiad in Hamburg (+3 –4 =3); In 1931, at first board in 4th Chess Olympiad in Prague (+3 –5 =7). In tournaments, he took 6th at Barcelona 1929 (José Raúl Capablanca won),7 took 7th at Sitges 1934 (Andor Lilienthal won),8 took 3rd at Madrid 1934 (Torneo Gromer), took 4th at Paris 1938 (L'Echiquier, Baldur Hönlinger won),9 tied for 9-10th at Barcelona 1946 (Miguel Najdorf won),10 took 6th at Gijon 1948 (Antonio Rico won), tied for 8-9th at Almeria 1948, and won both at Madrid 1947 and Linares 1951. He played against the best of his time but never was a professional player. His true job was military man(!). He wrote some interesting chess books and articles, and had a long life of 90 years (1883-1973). Dec-31-04    meloncio: <Benzol> You're right. I have found a reference about him as Spanish Chess Champion in 1902, after a tournament celebrated by the coronation of the king Alfonso XIII. Pablo Morán had an interview with him in Madrid in 1968, and wrote about it: "He was then very old, still a true gentleman, very kind and nice, but his mind was almost lost and he confused names and dates. I couldn't get the exact information I needed for my book; anyway I felt a great respect and thankfulness for him, a living piece of the Spanish Chess". I own one of the biggest in the world collection of biographical chess books, but this one is still missing. Does anybody know who to get it? The book is not a true biography, because there are just two pages about it. In fact, the first part of the book is a collection of newspaper articles and lectures; the second part is a collection of his best 50 commented games. I know there is another previous Golmayo's book: 'Temas de Ajedrez', but I've never seen it.
