STOCKFISH (COMPUTER)
(born 2008) Norway

[what is this?]

Stockfish originated as a fork of Tord Romstad's Glaurung (Computer), improved by Marco Costalba, Romstad and Joona Kiiski. It is now developed by the Stockfish community, using Gary Linscott's Fishtest testing framework to test new code.

As of 2016, Stockfish is one of the two strongest chess engines in the world, with Komodo (Computer), and the strongest open-source engine. It won TCEC season 6 in 2014, defeating Komodo in the superfinal.

Stockfish runs on Linux, Windows or Mac OS X platforms, as well as mobile platforms such as the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Various installations have supported set-ups such as 8 Gbytes for a hashtable with an 8-core processor under its UCI protocol.

BishopBerkeley: I see that Stockfish is second only to Rybka (Computer) in two of the major computer Chess engine ratings lists (as of this date):

More on Stockfish here [numeric references in the article]:

=== begin quoted text ===

Stockfish is an open source chess engine, developed by Tord Romstad, Joona Kiiski and Marco Costalba and licensed under the GNU General Public License version 3. The current version 1.7.1 (as of April 10, 2010) is available as C++ source code, and also has precompiled versions for Microsoft Windows, Linux 32-bit/64-bit and Mac OS X Snow Leopard 64-bit available. The program uses the UCI protocol and can therefore be operated under various graphical interfaces. It can use up to eight CPU cores in multiprocessor systems. The maximum size of the transposition tables is eight gigabytes. Stockfish implements an advanced alpha-beta search and uses bitboards.

In various computer chess rankings Stockfish 1.7.1 is second behind the top commercial program Rybka and just ahead of Naum.[1][2]

The program originated from another open source program by Romstad named Glaurung. Stockfish was forked from the 2.1 version of Glaurung; the latest Glaurung version 2.2 was released December 2008 but is no longer developed.

On a similar note:

The big match has begun, between Stockfish 1.8 and Rybka 4.

Follow it live here:

Yes, both <HOUDINI 1.02> and <IVANHOE R57A> are just as strong as Rybka 4.

http://www.open-chess.org/viewtopic...

<HOUDINI 1.03> is scheduled to be released on July 15th so we may be only 5 days away from having an engine that is already(!) stronger than Rybka 4.

al wazir: I took a very cursory look at recent computer games. Based on that, I get the impression that Stockfish is the biggest, baddest fish currently swimming in the chess pond. (If I'm wrong, please correct me.)

However, I found no Stockfish vs. Stockfish games in the database. This may be because such games would run afoul of the <Chessgames.com> software, which was probably written with the idea that a game must be played between two different players, who necessarily have different names. But I think a Stockfish vs. Stockfish match of, say, 20 games would be very interesting, assuming that the two sides used identical computers and identical programs. If, for example, white won more often than black, that might be taken to suggest that the program's opening book is slanted in white's favor. Alternatively, it could be taken as an approximate measure of white's intrinsic advantage.

Does anyone know if anything like this has ever been tried?

Nov-21-13  galdur: Stockfish is the big bad fish now.

Nov-21-13  InfinityCircuit: <al wazir> There have been (literally) tens of millions of Stockfish-Stockfish games, if not more: http://tests.stockfishchess.org/tests

Most are at very short time controls: 15 seconds or 60 seconds a side, with proportional increment.

Of course, these aren't PGNs. But I'd encourage you to just run Stockfish against itself on your own hardware! I always find it fun to see.

And Stockfish is the best at the moment, a stunning +11 =19 -0 in Stage 4 of nTCEC Season 2, including three wins over Houdini dev.

Nov-21-13  galdur: There have been several other beautiful chess concepts by the fish and others that should be included in the database here.
Jan-04-14  supertimchan: The version that was used in TCEC is now available on the App Store for free! SmallFish has been updated with the Stockfish DD engine.

http://www.facebook.com/scchess

Jan-04-14  MarkFinan: <supertimchan> I have that droidfish DD. I find it easier to play against by adjusting its strength and playing time than I did with shredder where you go up in levels. I also used to reach about 12-13 and really struggle but I have had it much higher. Depended on how sharp I felt that month, or how busy / not busy I was. I kept having to re download shredder and start from level 1 again, every 30 days which was annoying because some months I wouldn't even get past level 10. Top app is droiders 😄
Jan-04-14  supertimchan: <MarkFinan> Yeah. I understand your frustration. I also don't like to start from level 0. I know my own strength, I'd like to decide how strong my computer should play.

Droidfish is a cool app. But it lacks graphics. It works but sometimes I think we're like back in the old days.

Jan-04-14  MarkFinan: I don't mind the interface, in fact I prefer it to the free version of shredder I had. What level do you set droidfish on and what time setting, if you don't mind me asking?? I have it on 62% right now, and if im feeling sharp and in the right mood *and* I have the white pieces I beat it. I lose more than I win, but I do beat it pretty often.
Jan-04-14  MarkFinan: Btw I only play stockfish (droidfish) on my phone. I do have a computer that I could download a few of the best free engines out, but I don't use it! Don't need to nowadays for chess because the phones are just as good..
