Check It Out: A fairly equal games until they reached the dreaded endgame phase. Carlsens mastery here slowly ground Mamedov down until he tapped out.

perfidious: Once the position after 27....d5 is reached, either White manages to grovel a draw after a long, painstaking defence or Carlsen wins.

This is standard stuff, and Black has whatever chances there are. Avoiding the wrong end of such grinds as Carlsen vs Duda, 2021 is merely one attribute of the profile that makes Carlsen one of the all-time greats.

After white's D pawn fell with 59..Nxd4 60.Re5+ Kf6 and whoops! He realizes he can't win the d pawn back since 61.Rxd5? Ke6 wins at least the exchange. Black's d pawn is now free to launch.

< 61.Re1 > is practically forced in lieu of black's threat of ..Rd1+ Ka2 ..Nb3 with ..Ra1# < 61..Nf3! > a strong square for the knight, strengthening the dark squares in front of the D pawn, so it can run at warp speed. < 62.Re8 > What else?! < 62...Rb3 > clearing the path for the passer, while keeping an eye on the B pawn. White can play moves like Rd8 and Bf4 to try and cut off the pawn, but then his B pawn falls. The ending is pretty hopeless.
