Apr-20-25  mel gibson: I thought 26. .. Ne3

Stockfish 17 has a different choice to the game:

26. .. Nh3

(26. .. Nh3 (1. ... Nh3 2.Qg3 Ne3 3.Qxe3 Bxg2+ 4.Rxg2 Rxd1+ 5.Nxd1 Nf4 6.Qd2 Qa8 7.Qf2 b5 8.Ne3 bxa4 9.Nd2 a3 10.bxa3 Rc3 11.Ndc4 Qe4 12.f6 Nxg2 13.Qxg2 Rxe3 14.Nxe3 Qxe3 ) +3.22/48 303)

score for Black +3.22 depth 48.

If I force SF to play the game ply it's a draw:

26. .. Nf4

27. Rxd8+ (27. Rxd8+ {(1.Rxd8+ Rxd8 2.Rxd8+ Kh7 3.Bxc6 Qxc6+ 4.Nd5 Nxd5 5.Qg2 e4 6.Nd4 Qc4 7.h4 Nf4 8.hxg5 Nxg2 9.Ne6 Qf1+ 10.Kh2 g6 11.Nf8+ Kh8 12.Nd7+ Kg7 13.f6+ Kh7 14.Nf8+ Kh8 ) 0.00/67 53)

score = 0.00 _ a draw.

If I force SF to play my choice:

26. .. Ne3

(26. .. Ne3 27. Qxe3 (1.Qxe3 Bxg2+ 2.Rxg2 Rxd1+ 3.Nxd1 Rxc2 4.Qg3 Qe4 5.Nc3 Qc6 6.h4 Rxb2 7.Nd1 Rb1 8.Qd3 Qe4 9.Qd8+ Kh7 10.hxg5 Qf3 11.g6+ fxg6 12.fxg6+ Kxg6 13.Kh2 Rxd1 14.Qh4 Qf4+ ) -0.36/51 251)

score for White -0.36 depth 51.

Apr-20-25  pauldo: 26. .. Nh3 forcing the bishop to take the knight or the queen to move and then Nf4.
Apr-20-25  King.Arthur.Brazil: If we only play the useless 26...Kh8?? then 27. Nxd5 Bxd5 28. Bxd5 Rxd5 29. Rxd5... and B lose a piece (or the ♘ or the ♖). Then, the "helping" move could be: 26...Nh3 27. Qf3 Nhf4 28. Nxd5 Nxg2? 29. Ne7+ Qxe7 30. Rxd8+ Rxd8 31. Rxd8+ Qxd8 32. Qxc6 Nf4 33. Qf3 Qd5...

Must be a better reply. 26...Nh3, which cannot be captured: 27. Bxh3 Nf4+ a) 28. Kg1 Nxh3+ win the ♕ also b) 28. Bg2 Bxg2+ 29. Kg1 Nxh3#. The following moves are "forced"...27. Qf3 Nhf4

Now, 28. Nxd5 Rxd5 29. Rxd5 Nxg2 30. Rd8+ Rxd8 31. Rxd8+ Kh7. So, W has to find where to put the ♕ and don't lose it: a) 32. Qg3 Nf4+ 33. Kg1 Ne2+; b) 32. Qf2 Nf4+ 33. Kg1 Nh3+; c)32. Qd1 (or Qf1), Ne3+ and Nxd1 (or Nxf1), d) 32. Qe2 (or Qd3), Nf4+ and Nxe2 (or Nxd3); e) 32. Qc3 Nf4+ 33. Kg1 Ne2+ and Nxc3; f) 32. QG3 Nf4+ 33. Kg1 Ne2+ and NxG3; g) 32. Qh3 Nf4+ 33. Kg1 Nxh3+. Therefore, the W♕ has nowhere to hide. (you know fellows, I love to conquire enemy's Q ).

Maybe, W can try to escape with: 26...Nh3 27. Qf3 Nhf4 28. Ne4 Nxg2 29. Qxg2 Ne3 30. Rxd8+ Rxd8 31. Rxd8+ Kh7 32. Qd2 Bxe4+ 33. Kg1 Nxg4 34. Qe2 Bxf5. B has ♗+2♙ x ♖, maybe with better chances to win. But there's a several moves to study. Hope that I haven't forget some stupid move to ruin my thoughts.

Apr-20-25  King.Arthur.Brazil: In the game line, after 27.Rxd8+ Kh7 28.Bxc6 Qxc6+ 29.R8d5 Rd8, maybe W could escape with: 30. h4 when the Kh2 can be a escape route.

scormus: Didn't get this at all. I felt instintively that a Nd move was the key, and looked at 26 ... Ndxc3, ... Nf4 and ... Ne3 moves but didn't like any of them because of 27 Rxd8+. I see that SF didn't either.

I should have put this aside for a while and come back to it later. ... Ne3 was the right move, but 26 ... Nh3 was needed first. Should really have seen that.

Apr-20-25  vajeer: Nh3 - Ne3 one two is deadly...but
If white chooses to defend with 27.Qf3 then Nhf4 is better. But let's say black has spent so much time pondering the combination and decides to play 27...Ne3 nonetheless then we get to see some sharp play. After 26...Nh3 27. Qf3 Ne3 28. Rxd8+ Kh7 29. Qxc6 Rxc6 30. R1d7

Engine suggests 30...Nxg4 (threatening Ngf2#) and to me that looks like the only move that lets black keep significant advantage. Here following the line given by the engine - 31. Be4 (this prevents Qa6 due to f6+ followed by Rxf7#). And black must continue with Nhf2+ evaluation by engine is -2.98 but the battle seems far from over

Apr-20-25  vajeer: If however, 26...Nh3 27. Qf3 Nhf4
It could lead to quick exchanges
28. Nxd5 Rxd5 29. Rxd5 Nxd5 30. Rxd5 Bxd5 31. Qxd5 Qxd5 32. Bxd5 Rxc2

b2 pawn will fall soon and Black will have two pawns and rook for knight & bishop. Score by engine is -3 although materially there is not much to separate the two.

Apr-20-25  bcokugras: What if 31. Kxc4?

Apr-20-25  Hercdon: So white should have one with Nh3 but strayed. A verrry complicated position that took lots of nerve by both players to get there
