Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-11-25  TheaN: Interesting pattern here, pretty good Tuesday puzzle that surprisingly has no kibitzes at all yet. Black is down a piece but gets it back with interest after <35....Rxf1+!>.

36.Kxf1 Qd1+ 37.Re1 Bc4+ is quite disastrous, as after 38.Kg1 (Bd3 Bxd3+ leads to the same but also surrenders e5) Qxe1+ 39.Kh2 Qxe4 -+ Black picks up all pieces but the queen. Instead <36.Kh2 Qxe5+ 37.f4/g3 Qh8 -+> and Black ends up two pawns up. I saw the less appealing Qh5?! to simplify and thought it'd be enough, OTB I'd probably re-evaluate and see Qh8 at the end, but I don't think it really matters.

takebackok: Think and a half Tuesday, saw the easy 35...Rxf1+ if 36. Kxf1 Qd1+ 37. Re1 Bc4+ but even after the better 36. Kh2 Qxe5+ 37. g3 Qh5+ etc. black will win the "a" pawn and the game.
Feb-11-25  King.Arthur.Brazil: King's line is: 35...Rxf1+ 36. Kxf1 Qd1+ 37. Re1 Bc4+ 38. Kg1 Qxe1+ 39. Kh2 Qxe4 40. f4 Bd5 ...
Feb-11-25  saturn2: 35...Qd1 is a win too
Feb-11-25  mel gibson: easy peasy.

WannaBe: Picard: "Mr. Worf, engage attack pattern Picard Alpha Sigma Six, on my mark. Engage"
Feb-11-25  cocker: Black must be careful if he keeps the queens on after 36 Kh2; B x g6 is a threat in some lines

Noticed that too, as well as perhaps the slightly more logical Qa1 (rook before queen). But in both lines queens stay on the board so in that sense Rxf1+ is better.

Actually, the chosen move for the puzzle is a tad bit weird: it's a good Tuesday line, but obviously part of Black's combo that starts as early as 32....Rxd4!, because after 33.Rxd4 Qxd4 both bishops are hanging, 34.Re2 Rd1! and now just Black's bishop is hanging but we know what happens after 35.Qxh6. So just putting 35....Rxf1+ as a combination move doesn't do Black's play justice. No criticism this time, but Black planned this line early.

scormus: <cocker: Black must be careful ... after 36 Kh2>

That's why this is a Tuesday puzzle and not a Monday puzzle. After 36 Kh2 Qxe5+ 37 g3, B can win boringly with 37 ... Qh8 (38 Qxh8 Kxh8). Or slightly less boringly with 37 ... Bd5 38 Rc2 Rxf2+ (38 Bxg6?? Rh1#). But not with the plausible looking 37 ... Qa1? (38 Rd2! Rd1=)
