 | | takebackok: 22...Ne5 & if the king tries to run win the queen at least. |
Oct-02-23 | | geeker: Maybe a little more difficult than the usual Monday. But the White King is so insecure that 26...Ne5, blocking the W Q's protection of b2, has no answer. That was the first candidate move I considered, but took some analysis to verify. |
Oct-02-23 | | Brenin: 22 ... Ne5 cuts the White Q off from defending the N on b2. If 23 fxe5 or Nxe5 then Qxb2 mate. If the N moves then 23 ... Rb1 mate. If 22 Rd2 then Qa1+ 23 Kc2 Rxb2+ 24 Kc3 Rb1+ 24 Kc2 Qb2 mate. |

Oct-02-23 | | catlover: Got it...an interference move. As <geeker> said, a little harder than we expect for Monday. |
Oct-02-23 | | Mayankk: I spent some time pondering over 22 ... Qa1+ 23 Kc2 ( 23 Kd2 Rxb2+) Nb4+ but couldn't make it work. Then I also spent time on 22 ... Bxc4 ( 23 Nxc4 Rb1#) and wondering if 23 ... Qa1+ works better now. But lines got longer and murky. I then stumbled upon the beautiful 22 ... Ne5 idea, cutting off the White Queen from defence of the hapless b2 Knight. And if 23 Rd2, 23 ... Qa1+ 24 Kc2 Rxb2+ works perfectly now. |

Oct-02-23 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: As the ♕ is the only real protection to b2, it is quick to block this power: 22...Ne5 (now 23. f4xe5 or Nxe5 loses directly to 23... Qxb2#). 23. Rd2 (what else?) Qa1+ 24. Kc2 Rxb2+ 25. Kc3 Rb1+ 26. Kc2 Qb2# (or 26. Rb2 Qxb2#). The walking ♔: 23. Kd2 Rxb2+ 24. Ke1 Re2+ 25. Kf1 Rf2+ 26. Ke1 Qe2# or 24. Ke3 Re2+ 25. Kd4 Qxc4#. Mondays! |

Oct-02-23 | | stacase: White's Queen is spoiling all the fun. Black wants to take that b2 Knight. What to do? Oh! 22...Ne5 does the job nicely. |
Oct-02-23 | | saturn2: I went for 22...Ne5 23.Rd2 Qa1 24.Kc2 Qxb2+ 25.Kd1 Qb1 26.Ke2 Qxe4 Now there is the threat Rb1 and if Kf2 the fork Ng4 |
Oct-02-23 | | TheaN: Most has already been said, after blocking with <22....Ne5 -+>, White has no proper way to defend Nb2 and the position collapses soon after. Kind of the 'sole defender vs multiple attackers' situation. In this case, that sole defender is lost, and soon after the king. |

 | | perfidious: The interference idea 22....Ne5 leaves the white king bereft of defenders. |

Oct-02-23 | | Hercdon: Should have looked deeper. I saw the issue with the long diagonal, but didnt realize that the solution was to block it |
Oct-02-23 | | raymondhow: This is a Monday puzzle only because White immediately resigned. Had he played on with 23. Rd2 and been mated a few moves later, would have been a Wednesday or Thursday puzzle. |

 | | Check It Out: Got it after looking at the obvious Qa1+ for awhile. Soon, my chess brain got tired of whites knight always being defended, so how to remedy that? Aha, 22...Ne5. If 23. Rd2 Qa1+ 24. Kc2 Rxb2+ 25. Kc3 Qa3+ 26. Kd4 c5# click for larger view |
