Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-07-22  Brenin: I soon saw 30 ... Qxf5 31 exf5 Rxe1+ 32 Kh2, and originally intended 32 ... Kg7 with the intention of 33 ... Rh8+, e.g. 33 Qxf4 Rh8+ 34 Kg3 Nh5+ winning the Q. However, I then realised that the game line 32 ... g3+ was even stronger, with a royal N fork on e4 instead.
Apr-07-22  agb2002: Black is one pawn down.

White threatens Qxf4.

The black rooks x-ray the white rook on e1. This suggests 30... Qxf5 31.exf5 (else drop a piece) 31... Rxe1+:

A) 32.Kh2 g3+ 33.fxg3 (33.Kh3 Rh1#) 33... fxg3+ 34.Kh3 (34.Kxg3 Ne4+ and 35... Nxd2 wins decisive material) 34... Rh1+ 35.Kxg3 Ne4+ wins decisive material.

B) 32.Qxe1 Rxe1+ 33.Kh2 g3+ 34.fxg3 fxg3+ 35.Kh3 Rh1+ 36.Kxg3 Ne4+ and 37... Nxd6 wins decisive material.

Apr-07-22  Boerboel Guy: Medium easy!
Apr-07-22  mel gibson: No - I didn't even consider a Queen sac.

Stockfish 14.1 says:

30... Qxf5

(30. .. Qxf5 (♕g6xf5
♖d6-d8 ♘f6xe4 ♖d8xe8+ ♖e5xe8 ♕d2-d4+ ♔h8-h7 d5-d6 ♘e4xd6 ♕d4-d1 ♖e8xe1+ ♕d1xe1 ♘d6-e4 f2-f3 ♘e4-f6 b4-b5 a6xb5 f3xg4 ♘f6xg4 ♕e1-b4) +10.20/42 495)

score for Black +10.20 depth 42.

Using Stockfish 14 because it solves for mate better than 14.1 :

When White resigns it's mate in 17:

32. Kh2 g3+
33. fxg3

(f2xg3 f4xg3+ ♔h2-h3 ♖e1-h1+ ♔h3xg3 ♘f6-e4+ ♔g3-g4 ♘e4xd2 b4-b5 ♖e8-g8+ ♔g4-f4 ♖h1-h4+ ♔f4-e3 ♘d2-c4+ ♔e3-f3 ♘c4xd6 b5xa6 b7xa6 ♔f3-f2 ♘d6xf5 d5-d6 ♖h4-f4+ ♔f2-e2 ♖g8xg2+ ♔e2-d3 ♖f4-h4 d6-d7 ♖g2-g3+ ♔d3-e2 ♖h4-h2+ ♔e2-f1 ♘f5-e3+ ♔f1-e1 ♖g3-g1+) -M17/62 266

score for Black _ mate in 17.

Apr-07-22  parch: I see 30...Q:f5 31.Re6

(31.ef5 R:e1+ 32.Kh2 g3+ 33.fg3 fg3+ 34.Rh1+ wins)

(31.ef5 R:e1+ 32.Q:e1 R:e1+ 33.Kh2 g3+ 34.fg3 fg3+ 35.Kh3 Rh1+ wins )

31...N:e4 32.R:e8+ R:e8 33.Qd3 f3 34.g3 Qh7 winning material.

Apr-07-22  TheaN: More on the easy side than medium, given there's not much to consider from Black's end. Really just <30....Qxf5> makes sense from a combination point of view.

It wins, given Black wins at least a piece on penalty of <31.exf5 Rxe1+ 32.Kh2 (Qxe1 Rxe1+ -+) g3+ 33.fxg3+ fxg3+ 34.Kh3 (Kxg3 Ne4+ -+) Rh1+ 35.Kxg3 Ne4+ -+> and the fork Black was looking for happens, and Black goes rook and piece up.

Apr-07-22  Cellist: I chose the original line that <brenin> selected (with 32. ... Kg7). Not nearly as good as the game line, but it also wins.
Apr-07-22  Brenin: Despite a certain amount of faffing about (taking four moves to exchange his LSB for Black's undeveloped LSB, and the show-jumping display from moves 20-23), White had a reasonable position until 30 Qd2 made his Q forkable by Black's N. Instead, 30 Re2 would have defused Black's Q sac by allowing 30 ... Qxf5 31 exf5 Rxe2 to be answered with 32 Qd4, winning the N. Even so, White has to tread carefully, e.g. 32 ... Re1+ 33 Kh2 g3+ 34 fxg3 (not 34 Kh3 Rh1 mate) fxg3+ 35 Kxg3 and now Black is running out of counterplay.
Apr-07-22  Stanco: I went for the game line.
33.fxg3 fxg3+ 34.Kh3 Rh1+ 35.Kxg3 Ne4+ boning the Lily
Apr-07-22  AlicesKnight: Found the gameline. A fascinating perception. Something about the shape reminded me of Euwe vs Lasker, 1934 - though I'm not sure why (perhaps the R+N for Q element, or the central file dominance).
Apr-07-22  henilsson: Chrisowen: what?
Apr-07-22  Hercdon: <henilsson> Exactly!!
Apr-07-22  raymondhow: For some reason I had blinders on for 30 ... Qxf5. Had I considered it, likely I would have chosen it. Instead just kept staring at 30...Nxe4 which doesn't work.
