Jun-01-23 | | Granny O Doul: Looked at K.A.B's line, but with 33...Rd2. |
Jun-01-23 | | catlover: Alas, I did not get this one. 30...Rf5—what a beautiful move! |
Jun-01-23 | | catlover: I wonder if Volokitin foresaw 30...Rf5 when he played 28...Ng3+. |
Jun-01-23 | | landshark: I saw <31...Rf5> pretty quickly and was really proud of myself. Then W's <32.Bh2> gave me pause. Found <32...Rh5> after about a minute and was feeling good about it - "what on earth could W play now?"
<32.Rd2?!> - Will wonders never cease? Looking at this position I chose 32...Rxd2, not seeing any last resources for W. I hope I wasn't swindled.... |
Jun-01-23 | | landshark: Correction: My sequence is as stated above but starting at <Move 30> for Black. |
Jun-01-23 | | jrredfield: Missed this one. I see where 31 ... Rf5 not only threatens an h file attack, but also blocks the White Q from intervening such as 31 ... Qh4+ 32 Qh3. But I didn't come up with that on my own. Perhaps past my bedtime. |

 | | perfidious: <catlover: I wonder if Volokitin foresaw 30...Rf5 when he played 28...Ng3+.> Hard to believe he did not, for it looks as though Black's attack has run aground without that pretty interference idea. As to the defensive possibility noted by <Brenin>, it appears that would have kept White going, though as noted, his position does not inspire confidence. |

 | | scormus: Great finish, 30 ... Rf5!! is a fabulous move played under great pressure
Just sorry I didn't get it. I tried 30 ... Qh4+ but couldn't make it work. |

30. Bh2 = |
Jun-01-23 | | AlicesKnight: Found the ...Rf5 block - a surprising resource, leading to material gain at the least. |
Jun-01-23 | | mel gibson: What a brilliant move -
I didn't consider that.

 | | Sally Simpson: Good puzzle this one.
click for larger viewFirst choice was the Queen check. Always look at the checks first. Nothing doing. Eventually hit upon Rf5. (after immediately rejecting it due to Rxd8+ Qxd8 and Rc8) Went back to Rf5 and only then spotted after the Rook check the mate with Bf2. Not too sure I would have got it OTB without a clue something was on. Maybe out of desperation. Black set it up quite beautifully. I suspect white missed the Rf5 idea because Rxd8+ is a check! a lot of combo's are ruined by an opposing check. The check threw me till I forced myself to look again because something must be on. It is after all a POTD. |

Jun-01-23 | | Allderdice83: Wow. Just wow. I looked at 30 ... Rf4, but then just 31. Be3 and the King escapes to g1. And 30 ... Qh4+ 31. Qh3 Qxh3 32. gxh3 Rxf3 33. Bg2 Rxa3 leaves Black with three pawns for the bishop, one of them an advanced passer, but probably not enough to win, without looking at an engine. The idea of setting up a self-block on a long-range defender (after 31. exf5), that's one I need to remember. |
Jun-01-23 | | Allderdice83: It's even better than I realized; after 30 ... Rf5!! 31. Be3 comes 31 ... Rh5+ 32. Kg1 Rh1+!! 33. Kxh1 Qh4+ 34. Kg1 Qh2#. That's the real reason that 30 ... Rf4? doesn't work. |
Jun-01-23 | | Allderdice83: And White's Q is blocked from h3 by the rook. If 30 ... Rf4? then 31. Qh3 or 31. Rxd8+ Qxd8 32. Qh3, and Black can win material but doesn't have a mate. |

Jun-01-23 | | TheaN: Saw <30....Rf5>, but different than usual I needed a few extra glances to see it actually wins. Sure, 31.Qxe7 Rh5+ 32.Qh4 Rxh4+ 33.Bh2 Rxh2+ 34.Kg1 Bf2# and 31.Qxf5 gxf5 -+. Bit more complicated is 31.Rxd8+ Qxd8 32.Rc8 Rh5+ 33.Qh3 (Bh2 Rxh2+ 34.Kg1 Bf2#) Rxh3+ 34.gxh3 Qxc8 -+. White held on with 31.Bh2, requiring precision as White's threatening quite some as well, 31....Rh5! 32.Rd2! Rxh2+ 33.Kg1 Bxd2 -+ reinstating the mate threat, but now on e3. <Allderdice83: Wow. Just wow. I looked at 30 ... Rf4, but then just 31. Be3> 31.Qxe7 #7? |
Jun-01-23
 | | takchess: At first blush I thought this was 30 ... Qh4 mate but of course the queen can block. The rook move is a great solution that I didn't see coming .
Very nice |

 | | Honza Cervenka: <farticchio: 30.Qe6 ??
30. Bh2 =>
Yes, but you have to see that after 30.Bh2! Qh4 white gives the mate earlier after 31.Qxe5+ Kg8 32.Rxg6+! etc. 30...gxh2 31.Rxd8 Rxd8 32.Re6 is enough to keep balance. |
Jun-01-23
 | | takebackok: Missed the blocking Rf5! Super nice plan/play! |
Jun-01-23 | | agb2002: Black has a pawn for a bishop.
White threatens Qxe7.
The first idea that comes to mind is 30... Qxe6 31.Rxe6 Rf4 but White has 32.Be3 (32... Rh4+ 33.Kg1 Bf2+ 34.Bxf2). The white queen can block the check Qh4+. This suggests 30... Rf5: A) 31.Qxe7 Rh5+ 32.Bh2 Rxh2+ 33.Kg1 Bf2#.
B) 31.exf5 Qh4+ 32.Bh2 Qxh2#.
C) 31.Be3 Qh4+ 32.Kg1 Qh2#.
D) 31.Rxd8+ Qxd8 doesn't change anything (32.Rc8 Rh5+ as in A). E) 31.Bh2 Qxe6 (31... Rh5 32.Bc4 Rxh2+ 33.Kg1 Qxe6 34.Bxe6) 32.Rxe6 Rh5 33.Bc4(b5,a6) Rxh2+ 34.Kg1 Bf2+ 35.Kf1 Rh1+ 36.Ke2 Re1#. |
Jun-01-23 | | agb2002: 31... Qxe6 in my line E loses miserably to 32.Rxd8+. I never stop perplexing myself. |
Jun-01-23 | | Halldor: Not easy to see. 30... Rf5 is a beautiful move which breaks the communication, prevents 31 Qh3 and threatens 31… Qh4† and mate next move. |
Jun-01-23 | | Saniyat24: poor White king surrounded by all those elephants...! |
Jun-01-23
 | | Check It Out: 30...Rf5 beautiful interference move. Did not see it. |
