White must have realised this after black's reply and so offered the draw.

<<<<CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP OF AUSTRALIA.>

SYDNEY, Thursday.>

The seventh chess championship game between W. Crane, jun., and J. L. Jacobsen was played to-night, when Crane for the first time kept his opponent at bay, and secured a draw. Crane offered the queen's gambit, which led to the first close game in the match. Jacobsen declined the gambit by 2 P to K 3, and the play proceeded on regular lines. At his eleventh move Jacobsen's attacking continuation Kt to Kt 5 required and received careful treatment from Crane, who played to simplify the position, as a defeat meant the loss of the match. At black's nineteenth move, as the forces and positions were equal, Crane proposed a draw, to which his opponent consented. The score now is — Jacobson, six wins; Crane, nil; the drawn game is not reckoned in the score.>
