Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-24-21  Brenin: It has to be 23 e6 Bxe6 (23... Be8 24 exf7 Bxf7 25 Rxe7 looks horrible, as does 23 ... fxe6 24 Qd3 Be8 25 Rxe6) 24 Rxe6 fxe6 25 Qd3, forcing an entry on g6, which can't be defended. The P on e6 also falls, and if White can get his R into the attack via c3 and g3 it's all over.
Jul-24-21  mel gibson: I knew it was one of the 3 pawns on e, f or g.

Jul-24-21  drollere: the e6 pawn was pretty obvious, but i went about it by sacrificing the N rather than the R: 23. Nxg6 fxg6, 24. e6 Be8, 25. h4 ... this is weaker than the game, because the N is the more valuable piece once the QB is gone.

Dionysius1: 23...fxe6 and 24...Be8 is a more stubborn, more interesting defense.

Jul-24-21  agb2002: White has a bishop and a knight for the bishop pair.

The pawn on f7 protects g6. This suggests 23.e6:

A) 23... Be8 24.exf7 Bxf7 25.Rxe7 wins a pawn with the better position.

B) 23... Bxe6 24.Rxe6 fxe6 25.Qd3

B.1) 25... Bf6 26.Qxg6+ Kh8 27.Qxh6+ Kg8 28.Qg6+ Kh8 (28... Kf8 29.Bh6+ and mate in three) 29.Qf7 Bg7 (29... Rg8 30.Ng6+ Rxg6 31.Qxg6 Bxd4 32.Qh6+ Kg8 33.Qxe6+ and 34.Rxc6 looks winning) 30.Ng6+ Kh7 31.Nxe7 seems to win.

B.2) 25... Kh8 26.Nxg6+ followed by 27.Nxe7+ and 28.Nxc8 wins a pawn at least.

B.3) 25... Kg8 26.Qxg6 Kh8 (26... Kf8 27.Rxc3 wins) 27.Bxh6 Rg8 (27... Bxh6 28.Qxh6+ Kg8 29.Qxe6+ followed by Nf5 or Ng6 and Rc3 seems to win) 28.Qh5 looks winning. For example, 28... Rgc8 29.Bxg7+ Kxg7 30.Rc3 Qxd4 31.Qg6+ Kh8 32.Qh6+ Kg8 33.Rg3+ Kf7 34.Qg6+ Kf8 35.Qg8#.

B.4) 25... Rg8 26.Qxg6+ Kh8 27.Bxh6 looks good for White. For example, 27... Bxd4 28.Qh5 Rg7 (28... Rgc8 29.Be3+ and 30.Bxd4) 29.Bxg7+ Kxg7 30.Qg4+ and 31.Qxd4.

C) 23... fxe6 24.Qd3 Be8 25.Rxe6 will win the g-pawn with an overwhelming position (25... Bf7 26.Rxg6 Bxg6 27.Qxg6+ Kh8 28.Nf5 followed by Bxh6).
