 | | LRLeighton: Really interesting game. Vishy actually overlooked a win with 33 Rxe3, and then if 33... Bd4, 34 Qa7! holds everything. No matter how black takes on e3, white wins a piece. |

Jul-03-24 | | Mayankk: I thought the answer was 33 ... Nxg2 34 Rxg2 d2 35 Rf1 Re1 and the pawn will Queen next. But I saw the text and realised the above fails to 35 Rxd2 Qxd2 36 Qa8+ Bc8 37 Qxc8#. Bad fail. Had to remove the White dark-squared Bishop first to eliminate the Qa8+ threat. |

Jul-03-24 | | mel gibson: I saw either 33. .. Nxg2 or
33. .. Bd4 but I could not see how either could win.Stockfish 16.1 says:
33. .. Bd4
(33. .. Bd4 (1. ... Bd4 2.Bxd4 Qxd4 3.Kh1 Ng4 4.Qa8+ Kg7
5.Qf3 Rf6 6.Qxd3 Nf2+ 7.Rxf2 Qxd3 8.Rxf6 Kxf6 9.a4 Qe4 10.Rf1+ Ke6 11.Kg1
Qxb4 12.Rf3 Qe1+ 13.Rf1 Qe3+ 14.Kh1 Qc3 ) +7.96/49 361) score for Black +7.96 depth 49.
When White resigns:
35. Qb3 Qa8
36. Qa4
(1.Qa4 Qf3 2.Rxg2 Re2 3.Qe8+ Rxe8 4.Bxd4 d2 5.Rc8 d1Q+ 6.Bg1 Rxc8 7.a3 Rc2
8.h3 Qxg2+) -M8/130 38
Black wins _ mate in 8.
If I force SF to play my first choice it loses badly:
33. .. Nxg2
(33. .. Nxg2 34. Rxd3 (1.Rxd3 Qb7 2.Rd8+ Bf8 3.Qa8 Qxa8
4.Rxa8 Ne1 5.Rc3 g5 6.Bxf8 h5 7.Bc5+ Kh7 8.Re3 Kg6 9.b5 Kf5 10.b6 Rxb6
11.Bxb6 Nc2 12.Rf3+ Ke6 13.Re8+ Kd7 14.Rf8 Kc6 )
+8.25/35 106)
score for White +8.25 depth 35. |

 | | MissScarlett: Tough for a Wednesday! |
|
Jul-03-24 | | TheaN: Exceptionally rough for a Wednesday. In fact, in hindsight nothing in this position screams 'puzzle for Black'. The solution is ironically enough the most logical move which wins for Black. Nxg2 fails on the counter punch Rxd3! +-, Bc3 simply doesn't work as the attack's too slow after Rxc3. A few minutes in I ran out of puzzle moves... for a Wednesday, this position could have started a move later. I <did> solve it though. Simply realizing Black had nothing better, bring in the last idle piece: <33....Bd4 -+>. The sting's in the discovered attack and this isn't better after 34.Bxd4 Qxd4: in addition, this destroys all counterattacking potential for White as it trades the bishops and the Black King has an escape square on g7. If instead 34.Kh1, I missed 34....Nxg2 but I probably would have found that OTB. Nxg2 is the only win, Ng4 is a draw. IMO Bd4 is enough for today, as the next alternative (Bb2) is +2.5 for White. Even drawing this position would be decent. |

 | | scormus: <TheaN> Nice summing up. Yes, I thought it was quite stiff as well. Can't take much credit for 33 ... Bd4 as it was the only move I could think of to give a likely win after 34 Bxd4 Qxd4 and probably 35 Ng4. I wasn't expecting the immediate 34 Kh1 and it put me off my stride. I mistkenly thought 34 ... Ng4? anyway, but after that W would equalise. Expected 35 ... Qf3 which would have won almost the same as ... Qa8 |

after
33. Rxe3 Bd4, 34. Qa7 Qxc5, 35. Rxc5 Bxe3+,
36. Kf1 Rf6+ 37. Ke1 d2+ 38. Ke2 Rf2+
39. Kxe3 d1Q 40. Kxf2 black could reach a perpetual, but after 40. Qb8+ Kg7 41. Kxf2
it seems that the white Queen can intervene |
|
Jul-03-24 | | TheaN: <maytintan: about vihsy missing a win, i thought:
after 33. Rxe3 Bd4, 34. Qa7 Qxc5 (...)> In all honestly, at first glance that line looks incredibly dangerous for White altogether. Considering it's a rapid game it's likely Anand was already low on time and couldn't calculate that out. He'd probably chosen to play it if Rd2 didn't looks safe... well, the rest is history. |

Jul-04-24 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: W cannot capture d3 because of Qxg2#. By his turn, if B♕ leaves h1-a8 diagonal, Qa8+ Bf8 Qxf8# is at hand. Then, 33... Bd4. 34. Bxd4 Qxd4 (otherwise: 34. Qa7 Ne1+ 35. Bxd4 Re1#!) with the same threat again. 35. Qa8+ Kg7 36. Qf3 Nd1+ (37. Rf2 Re1#) 37. Kh1 Re1+ 38. Qf1 Rxf1#. But W can reply 35. Kh1 Qh4 36. Qa8+ Kg7 37. Qf3 Ng4 38. Qg3 or 35... Ng4 36. Qa8+ Kg7 37. Qf3 Re3 38. Qf1 Qe5 39. Qg1 and in both cases W seems to resist. Therefore, the King don't reach a winning line. Let's check out. |
|
Jul-04-24 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: It seems W has found the answer but changed the order of the moves: 34. Bxd4 first and then 35. Kh1. In the game line, after 36. Rxg2 d2 37. Qd1, fails these two answers:
A. 37... dxc1=Q 38. Qxc1 Re2 39. Qf1 Qe4 (40. Qxe2 Qb1+ 41. Rg1 Qxg1#) 41. Qxe1 Qxe1+ 42. Bg1 Qxb4... B has a long way to win
B. 37... Re1+ 38. Qxe1 dxe1=Q+ 39. Rxe1 Bxc5 40. bxc5 Qa3... But the winning line is: 37... Re2! Because now: 39. Qxe2 dxc1=Q+ and mate next, or 39... Qf1 dxc1=Q 40. Qxc1 Qxg2#. |
