Aug-27-19  Count Wedgemore: The point here is that even if White is able to exfiltrate his knight, he has a lost position. Black is winning.
Aug-27-19  Diademas: <Count Wedgemore: <Diademas> After 22.Rac1, MVL simply plays 22...Rd8 instead of taking on d7 straight away, so your line doesn't work>

Yes, as I wrote :;)

Aug-27-19  Count Wedgemore: <Diademas> Right. Sorry about that.

This endgame looks utterly hopeless for White.

Aug-27-19  not not: if you dont want to test mvl sicilian, then open d4 and try to smash his benoni shield. why nf3 to allow c5 and sicilian setup?

An Englishman: Good Afternoon: Because White has played either 1.c4 or 1.Nf3 four times as often as 1.d4. He (correctly, in my opinion) avoided Black's Sicilian and simultaneously played a system he knew.
Aug-27-19  not not: b pawn will cost white a piece

dernier loup de T: No help against FRENCH POWER, since Philidor, Napoleon, La Bourdonnais, we are just the best, what will you do? Just bend your head, English, American, Russian and Chinese people, all together!! lol!

An Englishman: Good Afternoon: Oh, I don't know, the English Opening seemed work out all right for Wellington at the Waterloo Tournament...

dernier loup de T: Now, a little check on a4 would be nice, isn't it?
Aug-27-19  not not: if kingside pawns are exchanged Nepo can sacrifice bishop for pawn and get a draw

dernier loup de T: ..A draw: your secret wish, little rascal, mmm?...

dernier loup de T: It seems Nepo was not so fan of exchanging the bishops, no no!!...

OhioChessFan: MVL should have played Ra4/d4+ to get the h Pawn in a weaker spot.
Aug-27-19  WorstPlayerEver: White could not take the Bisher 45. Bxc4 because then Rxc4 and the White King is cut off from the b-pawn.

dernier loup de T: I guess you're right, <worstplayerever>: and that a check of the white rook on f5 after that would then not help much....

dernier loup de T: I did not imagine the game would finish in such a brutal and sudden way....

dernier loup de T: ...will look about the other games; good night everybody....
Aug-27-19  whiteshark: He's tripped himself up.
Aug-27-19  csmath: I think he was just tired from yesterday, he said so yesterday that he was very tired.
Aug-28-19  Ulhumbrus: The commentators or the computer analysis may have suggested that 14 exf6 was better than 14 0-0.

After 14 exf6 Bb4+ 15 Ke2 if Black doesn't take the f6 pawn White going to take the g7 pawn.

However on 15..gxf6 16 Bxf6+ Kc7 17 Bxa8 Rxa8 Black has the bishop pair and two connected passed pawns and Vachier Lagrave considered this satisfactory for Black.

Perhaps Nepomniachtchi thought so as well and chose 14 0-0 for this reason.

If Black could have drawn with best play although White had a very dangerous attack according to GM Ashley, the result suggests that at some point Nepomniachtchi went too far trying to win.

Aug-29-19  wtpy: Dernier, Since you have a sense of history I suspect you avoid playing the Agincourt defense when confronted by the English.
Apr-11-20  Jambow: Strange game... I win these weird games more often than I should not because I understand them but because I guess better.
