Feb-02-18  znsprdx: HELP
Aronian had 6x the time 25. to move
Speculation has it that he wanted to play MVL in tie breaks - maybe to show his dominance ?? Was the rook sac just diplomatic handshake to Naka - saying nice try but no trophy this time. Too bad the 3 of them played in London without tie offers - this Tournament wasn't for SGM's
Feb-02-18  lost in space: Probably a miscalculation, missing the safe for Black
Feb-02-18  lost in space: Position after 28...Kh7:

I guess whites’s plan was to play 29. Re3 and 30. Rh3#, but this doesn’t work:

29. Re3? Ra1+ 30. Kf2 Qxb2+ 31. Ne2 Qg7!! and no mate. Black wins.

So the Rep was to avoid a loss after a miscalculation (Rxh5)

Feb-02-18  ChessHigherCat: <lost in space: I guess whites’s plan was to play 29. Re3 and 30. Rh3#, but this doesn’t work: 29. Re3? Ra1+ 30. Kf2 Qxb2+ 31. Ne2 Qg7!! and no mate> I'm not sure whether this line works either but at least it prevents 31. Qg7:

31. Re2 Qc1 32. Nf3 Qh6 ( 32...Qf1+ 33. Kg3 Qxe2?? 34. Ng5+! Kg7 35. Qxe2) 33. Ng5+ Kh8 34. h4 Rg8?? 39. Kxg7)

Instead of winning the queen with Ng5+, white also has an interesting double check with Ne6+, but I haven't analyzed it out. Of course black isn't stupid enough to play Rg8 but White is still a pawn up and seems to have attacking potential while black's attack has kind of fizzled out.

Feb-03-18  Ulhumbrus: Suppose that instead of 16 Bxb5 White tries 16 Nc6. On 16...Bxc6 17 dxc6 Qb6+ 18 Kh1 Qxc6 19 Bf3 d5 20 Nxd5 looks promising.
Feb-03-18  lost in space: <<ChessHigherCat:> <lost in space: I guess whites’s plan was to play 29. Re3 and 30. Rh3#, but this doesn’t work: 29. Re3? Ra1+ 30. Kf2 Qxb2+ 31. I think also after 31 Re2 Qc1 32. Nf3 Qf1+ 33. Kg3

Black is winning after 33...Rg8! 34. Ng5+ Rxg5 35. Qxg5 Ra3+ 36. Re3 Qg2+ 37. Kh4 Qh2+ 38. Kg4 Qg2+ 39. Kh4 Qxg5+ 40. Kxg5 Rxe3

0-1

So this line does not work for white.

Feb-03-18  ChessHigherCat: <Lost in Space> Good point, so I guess Aronian really must have "blundered" there
Feb-03-18  lost in space: Yeps, and I think he planed 29. Re3 and mate and found after his Rook sac that the line is not working. Instead of losing he decided to make a draw by repetition.
Feb-03-18  Ulhumbrus: <ChessHigherCat:> <lost in space: I guess whites’s plan was to play 29. Re3 and 30. Rh3#, but this doesn’t work: 29. Re3? Ra1+ 30. Kf2 Qxb2+ 31. Ne2 Qg7!! and no mate> let us try a slight adjustment to this: 29 f6 gxf6 and only now 30 Re3:30...Ra1+ 31 Kf2 Qxb2+ 32 Ne2 and now Black's pawn on f6 obstructs the way back to g7 for Black's queen.
Feb-04-18  ChessHigherCat: <Ulhumbrus> Brilliant! (my only criticism is that there's no more g pawn at this point, so you meant 29. f6 exf6, right?) I wonder why Aronian didn't do it then? The only reason I can think of is that maybe black has better alternatives than Ra1+, etc. After 29. f6, exf6 is certainly forced because of the mating threat on g7 and if 29. Rg8??? Qh5#.
Feb-04-18  JPi: <ChessHigherCat><Ulhumbrus> Clever, however I doubt players as Aronian and Nakamura missed such combination. What about 29.f6 exf6 30.Re3 Ra1+ 31.Kf2 Qxb2+ 32.Ne2 Qb6 and White still can't use his Rook for the mate.
Feb-04-18  ChessHigherCat: <JPi> On t'a demandé ton avis peut-être? Just kidding, that's true. I was looking at Nd4 but it just leads to a perpetual: 33. Nd4 Ra2+ 34. Ne2 because if 34. Kg3?? Rxg2!

Feb-05-18  Ulhumbrus: <ChessHigherCat: <Ulhumbrus> Brilliant! Rg8??? Qh5#.> Yes, I did mean 29...exf6

< JPi: <ChessHigherCat><Ulhumbrus> Clever, however I doubt players as Aronian and Nakamura missed such combination. What about 29.f6 exf6 30.Re3 Ra1+ 31.Kf2 Qxb2+ 32.Ne2 Qb6 and White still can't use his Rook for the mate.> How about a second adjustment: On 29 f6 exf6 first 30 c5 Qxc5 and now 31 Re3 Ra1+ 32 Kf2 and Black can't play 32...Qc2+

Feb-05-18  ChessHigherCat: <JPi> On demande ton avis!: <Ulhumbrus: How about a second adjustment: On 29 f6 exf6 first 30 c5 Qxc5 and now 31 Re3 Ra1+ 32 Kf2 and Black can't play 32...Qc2+>
Feb-05-18  JPi: <Ulhumbrus> On 30.c5 Why not 30...Qxb2. <ChessHigherCat> I hope you will soon recover. Having a sense of humor helps to maintain good health.
Feb-05-18  ChessHigherCat: <JPi> Je voulais dire que je suis un malade mental, c.à.d. fou, mais c'était encore une blague. Les blagues en ligne souvent se perdent or se prennent au sérieux malheureusement.
Feb-05-18  Ulhumbrus: <JPi: <Ulhumbrus> On 30.c5 Why not 30...Qxb2.> Then one possibility is the zwischenzug 31 c6 before doing anything else
Feb-05-18  JPi: <Ulhumbrus> on 31.c6 Ra1 is an easy way to force the draw. In fact even on 30...Qxc5 31.Re3 Qc1+ 32.Kf2 Qxb2+ 33.Ne2 Qb6 White has to go for the perpetual check. Rook is a lot indeed. I don't know if Aronian did this sacrifice on purpose of a draw just to play his friend Maxime on tie break. Or did he confuse himself on aesthetic mirage attack by Rxh5? I don't know. These Chess artists have another common meaning.
Feb-05-18  JPi: <ChessHigherCat> La folie véritable n'est-elle pas celle qui s'ignore ? Vous savoir avec le sens de l'humour et la sant qui l'accompagne est la bonne nouvelle de ce jour.
Feb-15-18  Ulhumbrus: One alternative to 14 a4 is 14 Bf3 supporting the invasion Nc6.
